RE: Question on switching from DirectTV to Dish

I had Direct years ago and it is slightly easier to set up but once you get used to the Dish setup it goes pretty well. I like Dish better because of the DVR receiver. It handles 2 tv's from 3 lnb's through ONE cable. This is nice because there was no extra wiring needed. I use a twin LNB dish instead of the 3 lnb at home and lose a few unimportant channels. We still get the PPV's all the time and locals when in the spot beam. The unit has 2 remotes 1 infrared and 1 Rf. I use the wiring in the fiver to supply the bedroom tv and use the Rf remote. The signal ins't HD in the bedroom but that doesn't matter to us.

RE: Chevy 2500 6.0 w 4.10 towing experience?

I have a 2002 6 liter 4.10 axle 4 x 4. I had a Dutchman 34ft fiver about 9000lbs and it towed it fine. I got 7-9 mpg towing. I now have a 36ft Carriage loaded up weighs 12,500 that I tow. It does the job fine and still gets 7-8 mpg but it is a little overloaded and I will be moving to a 3500 6 liter soon.

RE: Need to repair the parts of the floor

I did my son's Dutchman a couple of years ago. We supported the sidewall and cut the floor back under it and out about a foot. Then we glued and screwed boards under the left over floor with a lip out about 3 inches. We installed the new floor on the lips with glue and screws. Last we secured the sidewall to the new floor and put back the carpet. You would never know it was repaired and has been working for the last 2 years with no problems.

RE: Up grading electric brakes

I replaced my 6k brakes with Dexter complete auto adjust brakes and the difference was amazing. I had a brake line on my truck pop a leak while taking the fiver in for new tires and I didn't even notice until I unhooked. My controller setting went from maximum to just above minimum.

RE: Survey - problems with slide

My first fiver had a large slide with 12 volt and 120 volt wiring in it. There were connections inside the fiver to connect this power up after the slide was out. I would guess that all the posters rigs have wiring in there slide and none are manually hooked up anymore and for the most part they all function perfectly. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a rig just because it had moveable plumbing. I personally would be far more worried about the slide out mechanism giving me a problem than the gas and water lines and drains and I have yet to have a slide out problem with any of my fivers (Knock on Wood LOL).

RE: Propane filled without using bleeder valve?

The propane cylinder valves have a high pressure relief valve built into the tanks. My Propane tanks have been filled by weight 95% of the time for the last 40 years or so. That is the correct way to fill. The reason the tanks are only filled to 80% of there volume is so there is room to generate gas from the liquid to supply the appliances and also over head to to help if the tanks are exposed to a lot of heat. If they are full and exposed to the sun on a warm day the relief valve will let out some propane to the atmosphere. As Propane is heavier than air the chances are slim that an explosion would occur with an ignition source. If you look at your trailer's tank box you will notice it is open on the bottom. That is to let out any over pressure gas. If the ignition source was right at the tank a fire could start that's why you shouldn't smoke right next to your tanks.

RE: Sewer Smell solution?

I never use the Blue stuff any more. For years all I do is buy cheap liquid laundry soap. I dump a half of the measuring cap that's on the bottle down the toilet followed by 3 to 5 gallons of water. Way cheaper than the blue stuff and works just as good. When I leave a park I dump and put the soap and water in the tank and it sloshes while driving. Keeps the tank and sensors clean. If you are using full hookups use a little more water than if you're camping without sewer hookups. This will help flush out the tank while staying in one place.

RE: Got New To Me TV. Thought tires were good. WRONG

I'm also running the Transforce Firestones and they have been very good. I'm on my second set. I replaced the first after 40,000 miles in 6 years with no problems. If I didn't tow I would still be running them as they were about half wore.

RE: Throwing out the Norcold referigerator

Another thing to consider with a residential style fridge is how level it is. The rv fridges have to be somewhat level for coolant circulation. House fridges are self defrosting. They work by cooling the freezer with the cooling coils and cooling the fridge box with forced air from the freezer that passes over the cooling coils. The defroster heats these coils and the ice that melts goes into a drain molded in the duct. If the fridge is out of level the defrost water may not drain properly and then freeze up. This cycle will continue until the duct is full of ice causing the fridge part to stop cooling because no air can flow. Be very careful of this it can be a big PIA as the ice will take a long time to melt if it happens on a trip.

RE: Inhaled steel wool

It will burn out with no ill effects as long as it didn't stop the draft induction fan. Steel wool is actually quite flammable and the amount in the chamber is nothing compared to the btu's in the Propane.

RE: 50 Amp shore power blows breakers

It sounds like you wired the 30 amp adapter to the extension cord. If that's the case, my guess if you have it wired incorrectly. Either the hot and neutral are switched but more likely the neutral and ground are switched. And yes KD4UPL is CORRECT a trailer with a 50 amp panel is wired for 220 volts. There are no 220 volt circuits in the panel but with the correct breaker one could be installed. The problem with this scenario is when using a 30 amp adapter the 220 volt appliance would not operate correctly. You shouldn't plug into a dryer plug because most dryer plugs are 3 wire and a 50 amp rv needs a 4 wire connection. We have fulltimed in our fiver on a 30 amp 220 volt circuit hooked to a 4 wire 220 volt 30 amp circuit. The 50 amp panel in rv's is the same exact panel used in single wide mobile homes right down to the same exact cord. My 50 amp extension cord is made from a mobile home cord.

RE: Which LT Tire

I am on my second set of Transforce AT's. The Ht's are highway and the At's are all terrain for 4 wheel drive. I had 40,000 on the first set and there was at least 30 % of the tread left but they were 7 years old. Being I pull a heavy fiver I did not want to run them any longer. No flats or troubles with them. I had the Firestone tires that predated the Transforce and got 60,000 out of them with no problems so I expect the lifespan is about 60,000 on the Transforce.

RE: What to do with no sewer hookup

I have 4 five gallon buckets with lids and a sewer end cap like 2oldmen shows in his picture. On the end of the cap I have a hose valve that you use to shut off a garden hose. When you're getting close to full on the gray make sure the ball hose valve is off and open the gray slide valve. Position one of the buckets under the sewer cap end and open the ball hose valve until the bucket is full the shut it off and put the lid on the bucket and move to the next bucket. Repeat until all the buckets are full and capped. Load them into your vehicle and take them to the dumpsite and empty them. 35.00 total if you buy the buckets and lids and valve at Home Depot. If you can find empty ones from drywall joint compound they can be free. Ball valve less than 5 bucks.

RE: Michigan State Parks named best in the country...

We have stayed at many of "our" parks and have never stayed at one we didn't like. Sure they don't have full hookups but we have managed to do without this option even though we prefer full hookups when on a longer stay. We stayed at Hartwick Pines the first half of October and it was very nice and FULL HOOKUPS besides. As far as I know there are only three parks in the system that have full hookups in them. The middle of the park was renovated a few years back and most of the full hookup sites are pull through. The outside sites are still electric only.

RE: Cabover window opening cut wrong!!

I would get some aluminum trim stock and cut the bottom side of a piece to fit the window exactly minus 1/8". Then I would make it about 2" wide or so. Then I would back cut the filon the same amount to free it from the styrofoam. I would then fish the piece of aluminum up under the filon. Follow this step with some caulking between the filon and the aluminum. Put butyl tape on the window mating surface and set the window in the opening spacing it to cover the aluminum strip completely. Install the frame and clean off any crushed out butyl tape. Wait a couple of days and clean off any more butyl tape that squeezes out. Then silicone caulk the window.

RE: Chevy gas engines

That engine is only available in the 1500 because it is not designed for heavy duty use and pulling power. It is a light duty high horsepower engine that would not make the grade in most 2500's or bigger. The 6.0 is a time tested and proven heavy duty engine.

RE: DOT roadblock today while towing - Hitch question

Years ago in 1971 I didn't have a lock in the hole on a very positive locking coupler on my snow mobile trailer with 2 machines on it. I hit a bump on the freeway going 70 and next thing I see is my snow machines passing me on the right. There was an exit right there and the trailer went up the ramp about a hundred yards and parked itself on the shoulder. I had enough chance to get off to and I followed it up and hooked it back up with a wire in it to get me home. Needless to say I never did that again on any trailer.

RE: Want a washer and dryer-choices?

We have the Sears W/D apartment sized stackables and they both work great. the load size is a little more than half of our large load home units. The dryer is 120 volt so no 220 is needed. We do have a 50 amp service but have used these units more on a 30 amp hookup than on a 50 amp. When the fiver is fully set up you don't even feel them when they are running. Wash quality is as good as the home unit and the dryer is a little slower than at home. We didn't miss them before we had them but after a few years we wouldn't be without them. To winterize run a little antifreeze through both hot and cold wash and then spin in out. Takes about 5 more minutes to winterize and about 1/2 gallon of stuff.

RE: Down side to using Red Max Pro.

I just did my fiver with RMP #3 and it looks great. I put on 2 coats in a little over 3 hours. I have to agree on using gloves when applying it. My fingernails had the wet look for a week before it started wearing off.
