RE: Long grades in and out of San Diego on I-8

Good reason to crank the generator and run the house air.

RE: Kingdome roof top Satellite

Have you reprogrammed the dish if you moved to a different part of the country? If not, that might be the problem. Regarding trees. When I get to a CG I turn on my tv and directv and get it working in the reception area or other unobstructed spot. Then I move around in my spot just a few inches at a time until I pick up a signal. I'm at Hunter Army Airfield Famcamp now under a heavy canopy of huge oak trees with spanish moss everywhere. The jockeying around got me a signal. Regions was the word I was looking for! Thanks, Katoomer. And there are nine of 'em.

RE: Regulations r/t parking RV at residence

Tex, The "new" military has changed a lot in the last few years. Commanders know their career depends on the NCOs and enlisted guys/gals actually out getting the job done. The old "don't do as do, do as I say days are gone". From what I've seen recently (I've been in eight famcamps for six months) and read in the base papers, Air Force Times, etc., a commander or senior anybody pulling rank for personal gain or benefit would be gone rapidly. "Lead by example" is the new mantra.

RE: Generator charging question

I owned two class C motor homes and the generators were not setup to charge batteries, only supply 130 VAC. I had to use a battery charger to charge my house battery. Most gens aren't setup to charge chassis battery either making installation of a Trik-l-Start necessary.

Mower mech hit the nail on the head; move off base. Problem solved.

RE: Boondocking

If possible buy a Honda, Yamaha, or other QUIET generator. One battery most likely won't last that long without recharging. The fridge uses 12 VDC even when cooling on propane so if you use any juice at all things will likely get pretty dark by the second night.

RE: Regulations r/t parking RV at residence

Amy, As a retired Command Chief Master Sergeant, I'll offer this up for you to consider. If the CO allows every RV on base to do as you request then the next request will be to do a simple tune-up by a weekend wrench bender. The next thing you know somebody will have a junker on blocks for weeks sitting in front of his house. The military police already have their plate full. Checking on long term, illegally parked rvs would be another issue for them to handle. You know somebody would abuse the privilege of allowing short term parking or minor repairs. Commanders, as good managers, don't create problems. They do provide reasonably close parking either free or inexpensive. The military has always taken pride in the appearance of their housing areas, especially in recent years. Not everybody wants to look at any rv parked in front of a house, even for a few minutes. I had mine parked in my side yard in CA, all but the top two feet hidden by a solid wooden fence. My next door neighbor mentioned how bad it looked EVERY time we talked! That house was off base. You have the benefit of rv parking on base either free or very cheap, in a secure lot. I would just grin and bear it. Thank God your husband is home so you guys can go camping, even if a bit inconvenient to load and unload. The base fire Marshall also probably has rules about the propane tanks being in the garage just as they do gasoline cans. I do disagree with the comments about the all the MWR money going to the golf courses and budget cuts causing problems. The golf course at Patrick AFB is now open to the public to help support the golf course as an example of new thinking to fund MWR projects. MWR funds are non-appropriated funds, I.e., no tax dollars involved. The golf courses are open to all ranks from E-1 to O-11, even the CInC. I am NOT an avid golfer, by the way. We're on our way home now from 6 months on the road and I didn't even take my clubs. My advise to you would be to pick your battles wisely. This one looks like a loser to me. Thank your husband for his service and you for your support of him.

RE: Securing Genturi to side of coach - How did you do it?

I used the suction cups for a couple of years and this winter in Key West finally riveted the brackets on. Took about 20 minutes. The rubber strap will slide up and down on the Gen-Turi if that helps.

RE: bugs

Probably grasshoppers, especially if where crops are growing. Spray way for glass and Bounce dryer sheets on painted surfaces.

RE: rv parks near lakes,in calf,az,utah

Dogs and swimming not allowed in many CA lakes because they are drinking water supplies for cities down below. Many way up are VERY cold anyway. Go up the eastern Sierras. Lots of lakes with campgrounds right next to them. Never figured out the dog prohibition since all of mother nature's creatures do their "thing" in the water.

RE: Sleep number mattress issue(s)

I had mine apart to install a new single control pump but really didn't pay any attention to the bladders. Any chance they are made with a top side and bottom side and they are installed upside down? We have a $2000 mattress set in our house that is awful. We've had it replaced twice under warranty and it Is qstill horrid. We get home next week after six months on the road and other than the yard work which I detest, our mattress there is a close second!

RE: Analysis of battery/charging times using generator...

A little Honda or Yamaha 2000 watt gen inverter will cut your fuel use down to about a gal of gasoline every five hours. There is NO way I would head out for four months knowing I had bad batteries.

RE: Sleep number mattress issue(s)

Something is different with your bed if both sides inflate at one time. Ours has a single remote that has a left and right button to select which half gets inflated or deflated. We've never had the roll to the middle problem and I weigh about 100 pounds more than my wife. When it is time to replace our regular mattress in the house it will be a Select Comfort.

RE: Big Bear Lake, CA

I worked CHP for ten years in BBL and know the road quite well. You can pull the grade with no problems if your Jeep is in good shape. Don't use 4WD on dry pavement. It will destroy your transfer case. SR18 from Lucerne Valley to Baldwin Lake has some of the steepest grade in CA for a state highway for short distances. NOBODY is going to set any speed records going up or down. SR 138 is a no-no pulling a trailer. Very windy and you'll have over 50 miles of it to BBL. SR 173 also a no-no. One lane for a good bit and the only dirt state highway in CA. again, about 50 mles of twists and turns to BBL. 330 will add at least 90 minutes to your trip and 35 miles of curves. 38 easiest but longest and will add a minimum of two hours to your trip. Take 18 from Lucerne. The steepest part of the climb is the first mile or two above the cement plant. From central CA take 58 to Kramer Junction and 395 south from Kramer toward Victorville. It is well signed to hit SR18 toward Lucerne. No need to go all the way to Barstow. That's a long way out of the way.

RE: Battery Replacement and Cables

When I'm out on a long trip like now (6 months) I check my battery levels monthly, give or take a few days.

RE: Trip Report: Death Valley in March

I worked Lone Pine/Death Valley for two years with CHP. It will be well over 100 all day AND all night in June and July. Days 110+ and night cool down to a "comfy" 100 - 105. If you go hiking take lots of water and tell somebody where you're going and when you'll return. If driving somewhere, take lots of water. If you break down STAY WITH THE VEHICLE. Wander off there and YOU WILL DIE. A truly spectacular place in the winter, Hell on earth in the summer.

RE: Finding the easiest route over the Appalachians

I was more concerned about the hitch, but.... I've driven all the interstates in WV and don't know of any that require slowing down to 25. That slow would be a traffic hazard under. Normal conditions. The worst one in my opinion is on I-64 going east, about 15 miles east of Beckley. I think it has 35 mph warning signs. All are well posted.

RE: Finding the easiest route over the Appalachians

WV interstates have some hills but nothing like their U.S. highways. I-64, I-77, and I-79 aren't bad drives. Not to change subjects but I would check the hitch rating on your M/H. My guess it is 3,500 pounds and a vehicle in an enclosed trailer will most likely be over that.

RE: Toad Brake-a-way

In my 33 years on CHP I don't recall a toad breaking loose. I personally investigated several accidents where trailers broke loose, almost all as a result of the trailer whipping. They always fail at the weakest point.

RE: Blue Ridge Parkway w/ 43' Class A & Toad ?

A good side trip is the D-Day Memorial in Bedford,VA. The little town of Bedford lost 23 guys on the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Well worth seeing. The book, "The Bedford Boys" is about them. Watch the access roads to the BRP. Many are VERY steep, VERY crooked, and VERY narrow. It is a spectacular drive. Try to hit Peaks of Otter on Friday and get their seafood buffet at the lodge.
