RE: Good service for me

You are correct and I neglected to say that the Good Sam phone service rep was very good. My car was at a hospital parking lot and I didn't know the street address there, but she looked it up and had it in seconds. She also looked up the address of the repairing car dealer for the tow destination. Good job all around.

Good service for me

We have had Good Sam Road Service for several years and have never needed it until last week. Had a problem with the ignition lock in my car and couldn't start it. Called GS and a tow truck was there within a few minutes. Very nice driver and good service. He towed me to the nearest dealer who repaired it. Good Service for me - actually great service. I just happened to get my Good Sam Road Service renewal notice in the mail today and have my check in the mail to them.

RE: Decal removal and paint

We have a 98 Dolphin with the BIG decals of dolphins and waves. We also had ours done at RV Stripes and Graphics in Apache Junction three years ago and it looks like new. Didn't need to paint anything. The original decals lasted 10 years and I expect these to also. RVSG photographed them, edited the photos, printed new ones, removed the old ones and put on the new. Their method of removal CLEAN took a couple of hours. It cost us about $2500. I think if you check on getting any paint job and especially hand painting graphics you will find it will cost many times what we spent. I think there is also a place in California with the same name that does this but can't vouch for their work.

I use vinegar and THEN baking soda to periodically cleant the toilet seal. Hard water will eventually cause a lime buildup on and round the seal, and can cause it to stop holding water between flushes. I flush and do not add more water, but pour in some straight vinegar and let sit, to soften the lime. Then I mix a little baking soda with water in a cup, and pour it into the standing vinegar and let it fizz. Then I flush and repeat two or three times.
I doubt that the toilet seal is the source of your odor unless it is leaking VERY badly. I replaced my roof vent with one that turns with the wind - very easy to do and it sucks the odors out the vent. I also periodically thoroughly clean my black tank using soap and a little bleach. The soap I use is dishwasher soap - not dishwashing liquid. Probably any soap would work, but I think that the dishwashing soap is a little more aggressive. To do this I put the mix in through the toilet, and then use a garden hose to fill the tank through the toilet. As I do this, I hold the toilet valve open with my foot and direct the hose nozzle through it to flush the pipe below the toilet thoroughly. I fill the tank all the way to the bottom of the toilet and let it sit for as long as I can - then dump. Then fill again with plain water and dump. This also cleans the sensors.

I have a 97 F-53, and my springs sometimes make creaking noises. There is light rust between the leafs and I have sprayed them with WD-40 which seems to helps a little for a while, but I think the problem is that some of the rubber separators on my leaf springs are gone. Anyone else have the same issues? Can the separators be bought somewhere?

If it were me, I would make evey effort to try conservation first. You can put on a shower head with a positive shut off that works easily, and take what I call camping showers - wet down - turn off - scrub - turn on and rinse. This alone will substantially cut your water usage and improve tank capacity. Washing dishes, stacking them, and not rinsing until all done, rather than rinsing each dish, is probably the second biggest user of water and tank capacity. Doing these two things may double your capacity, without any modifications or cost.

First let me say you can buy those adapters at Walmart anywhere for about $17. The plug on your shore cord may be cooler, but probably not if you are running both AC's and drawing a lot of current. I think that an important factor is that the pins on your 30 amp shore cord plug be very clean. If they are corroded or dirty, it creates electricaol resistance and will cause more heat. My Dolphin is a 98 and has a 30 amp system too. On mine, there is an energy management system, Intellitec, that controls the AC,s and other power usage to drop electrical loads - usually one of the AC's temporarily, when something like the microwave is run. After the microwave is finished, the system waits about 2 minutes then starts the second AC again. When you are running the generator, it has more capability to run 2 AC's than your shore cord through the energy management system. Bear in mind that a 30 amp hookup, is the equivalent of two 15 amp standard stick house breakers and IF it will run 2 AC's it is at it's absolute max.

RE: New engine question

I don't think you should be overly concerned about burning up the engine on a cross country trip. We have 86,000 miles on our 98 Dolphin with a Ford 460, live full time in it, and I am not worried about it. After all, with proper maintenance and care, a cross country trip isn't much different than driving it for longer periods close to home. I think the trip is actually less stressful on the engine, because there are far fewer starts, stops, lugging at low speeds, moisture buildup, etc. and the trip is a chance to let the 454 shine at what it does, run steadily at optimum RPM's and clean itself out.

We have had these sewer flies before and I believe they originally got into our tank from a park sewer system while we were stationary for a while, and I left the sewer hose connected. I didn't normally leave the tank valves open, but eventually found that they had moved from the park sewer system into my sewer hose and set up housekeeping (or is is hose keeping?). Then they moved into my tanks too - they can be very fast. I have seen them fly out of park sewer hookups at other parks when I am hooking up the sewer hose to dump, so I just don't usually ever leave my hose hooked up, but put it away, or at least disconnect it from the park sewer hookup after dumping.
What works for us to get rid of them is a thorough cleaning of the tanks and all drain pipes and connections. I dump the tanks, and when I refill them I also put in dishwasher (not dishwashing) soap and 3 or 4 cups or more of bleach. I fill the tanks absolutely to the top until the grey tank level is into the bottom of the shower, and the black tank level is just below, or at, the valve in the toilet. I use a garden hose run through the window, with a spray nozzle aimed down the toilet while I hold the valve open to fill the black tank. At the same time I am able to strongly spray the drain area beneath the toilet valve to clean the pipe pretty well. I open the faucets to fill the gray tank and I pour the bleach and soap mix into the sink and bathroom drains to fill the traps and clean the pipes. Then I let the totally full tanks sit for several hours. I drain the tanks and then fill the tanks with plain water and let that sit for quite a while, then drain. You may have to do this more than once if they come back. Another benefit to this is that it also cleans the probes and they actually work right for a while!

as Clay said, RV Stripes and Graphics can replace your decals. I went there and they took pictures of the old ones, edited them to clean up the colors and cracks, removed the old ones and put new ones and new stripes on. Came out GREAT!

The T handle socket is to remove and tighten the separate nuts on your wheels that hold the wheel covers on. The nuts are located uynder two fake lug caps that pull of with your fingers. The size is slightly larger than the actual lug nuts and only should be tightened by hand - they only hold the wheel covers on. Don't know what the other bar is.

I have a Generac in our 98 Dolphin also. I am not certain, but suspect that the oil level on the dipstick is not correct. I have had a lot of oil on the pan since we got it, but finally realized that when changing oil that when I drained the old oil out, there was about 1/2 quart more than the capacity listed. I also noticed that when changing oil and filling it up, I always had to add more after running to get to the full mark. The oil I added had to be added VERY slowly or it ran over. I used hot water and dish soap to wash off the pan and only put in the 1 - 1/2 quarts listed as the capacity. oil level on the dipstick shows half way between full and add, but I just leave it there and haven't added more. When I use or run the generator the level never really gets any lower and I don't have more oil on the pan. If you find out anything different please let me know.

I have a 98 Dolphin on the Ford chassis. My generator fuel line was rubber and ran to the top of the fuel tank. I was able to crawl under the motor home behind the right rear dual and could reach over the tank to the hose and nipple. The line was split. I was also able to remove the clamp and line and replace it with new fuel hose from NAPA. Solved my problem. I was lucky that I could reach it and you may be able to also.

psa0298 - I am very interested in how putting carpet over the old worked for you. I am curious to know if you used something to fasten down the new carpet. Did you use carpet edge strips or tape, or nothing? Did you have any problem with the new carpet moving or bunching up? Did you do anything with the engine cover or the steps or driver's area where the old carpet was probably glued down? Would appreciate your info because this sounds like a good solution for us too. Thanks.

We have day nite shades, and they are pretty good insulators and are easy to store. For really cold weather in our motor home I do put bubble insulation on the inside of the windshield though.

I know there are a lot of posts on RedMax, but I wonder what is needed to strip it, and how difficult is it to do, if you decide you don't want it on anymore? Do you use floor stripper? Would that mess up my gelcoat? I have heard that automotive wax is not OK to use on floors because it makes them too slippery. That being the case wouldn't automotive wax be better than RedMax for automotive applications? I have too much money, time, and TLC invested in my traveling house to do this. I don't have a problem in washing and waxing my house 2 - 3 times per year, just as I don't have a problem changing the oil or buying new tires. I don't think I want to try this. In 3 or 4 yearrs if any of the folks that did try it are still around, let me know how it worked out.

My Generac has a primer switch that I use when it has been sitting a while. It runs the fuel pump to fill the lines. Doesn't yours have one?
