RE: Leaking Exhaust Manifolds

I had a 454 chev. with this problem. Had a machine shop fix it. Lasted less than a year.My advice, don't get involved with leaking manifolds!!Which is why everyone else buys headers. Its pretty hard to find an older 454 that has not had manifold leaks. The main reason why the manifolds fail in the first place is extreme heat. Headers typically result in a cooler running engine, which tends to resolve those issues. That and new types of manifold gaskets are so much better than the old ones - so much so, when I pulled the 454 and installed the 502, I RE-USED the old gaskets, that had about 4 years of use on them. They are still fine today.

RE: Leaking Exhaust Manifolds

Exhaust bolts can be tricky or lucky. I've heard of soaking them in brake fluid. Kroil is also a good penetrate. I found putting the air ratchet on the lowest setting, and just let it bang till the bolt comes out. I was able to get all the bolts out of the 454 that way. If you end up pulling the manifolds, count on replacing them with headers. Done right, the headers should not leak.

RE: Poop there it isn't

My 2 original requirements for an RV was that it had a toilet and a fridge. Yes we make full use of the facilities. Best thing I have found is to put about 2 gallons of water in the black as soon as you drain it, and then dump liquid enzymes in it. That gives plenty of time to get things processing before the next trip.

RE: Miffed at Monaco Parts

Many of those driving lights fall under the category of PAR 36, which is a standard size. I have no idea what your lights look like, but searching under the term PAR 36 may find you something that is compatible or even identical. Par 36 is also used as an aircraft landing light, so you may find it under that as well. No manufacturer is going to use a custom unique bulb, they are too expensive. You just have to figure out whose bulb they used. I ran into trying to find a replacement bulb for my search light, which happens to be PAR 36. 45 bucks for a very short life bright bulb. The aircraft landing light worked in my case, but is only a spot, rather than dual flood and spot. But for the price, I took it.

RE: WorkHorse Rally in Texas

I think when they got away from Chevy and went to diesel engine that was there mistake!Or maybe it was the Bosch brake issue and the poor management/response time of the problem.

RE: 1997 454 MPG

WE NEED MORE INFO. GM came out with the Vortec in '96, which means totally different heads and port injection. The problem is that RV manufacturers use old chassis, so we have no idea which engine you have. There are huge difference between a TBI 454 and a Vortec 454.

RE: poorly done ad by Newell

Marketing and upper management rarely understand the product. That's why they make the big bucks. When I worked in a recording studio, I used to laugh at the adds that would show a microphone pointing in an unusable direction. It happened a lot more than one would expect. They didn't understand that large diaphragm studio mics pickup out the side. It was especially embarrassing, as you are advertising a technical product to a technical audience. Every one should know better, but marketing had no clue. Of course then again, maybe they are trying to appeal to the person who buys an expensive coach, and then complains about the fuel prices. They are portraying frugality. You are just not sophisticated enough to understand.

Because you stink. To a fly, they smell dinner. They are ADHD.

RE: Does such a thing as a decent gasser exist?

not all gassers are created equal. Not all DPs are created equal. If you look at a high end gasser, it will be much better than a low end diesel. Fleetwood and Thor have some pretty low end models. If you are looking at $60K units, you are looking at the very low end of the gasser market. Newmar or even take a look at the higher end gas Rexhalls if you can find one.

RE: Triton 10 or 454 better?

We had a 1984 coach on a GM P30 chassis with the 454, and now we currently own a coach on the Ford f53 chassis with the v10. As far as I'm concerned, of the 2 coaches we've owned, the Ford f53 chassis with the v10 is much better, hands down. The very early v10's prior to 2000 did have some spark plug issues, however I haven't read very many posts on the RV forums from those who had issues with the spark plugs. With exception of the Workhorse "W" series chassis I would consider the Ford f53 chassis superior to the GM P chassis for motor home application, having had both. Good luck with your searchAs far as engines, you are comparing apples and oranges. 1984 454 was carborated and ran around 220 HP. In 1996, GM came out with the Vortec version, which was port injected and was 290 HP, a whole different animal. One assumes the OP is talking about similar year engines. Similar V10 engine was only 20 HP more, so not much difference.

RE: Is there a wider replacement steering rim for 79 GM 750/16?

Don't know what your offset is, but I'm pretty sure any 8 lug rim (Dodge, GM, Ford) will fit. This means you can go to Summit, or TireRack and just buy aluminum rims. 8 lug rims are typically rated 3K lbs, and some will be rated higher. I have American Racing Wheels on my coach. They only thing I dislike is the center hub rusts. You can get a center hub from someone else.

RE: Tire man says!!!!!!!

One could buy a used coach, swap the tires, turn around and make a bundle.

RE: Towing Boat with Class A

It may be difficult to find something in that short in those years. Power wise, if you can find a '96 or newer engine - meaning Vortec, you will pick up a substantial amount power. Be aware though that engine years and coach years can be substantially different. The only way to know for sure is look under the dog house.

RE: Towed vehicle safety cables vs chains question

Don't think you want to go there. Putting that much faith in the baseplate manufacturer can have catastrophic results. Found the thread from 2007. Here it is: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/20128352/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1 Shortly after that one, there was 3 more just on RVnet. I had to look through that entire thread to figure that one out. The baseplate didn't fail but part of the actual vehicle failed. Looks like a design flaw in the Ford Explorer Scout the way they have it set to tow. I doubt Ford authorizes it to be towed that way. My Jeep has tow hooks and the manual specifically states that the tow hooks are not strong enough for recreational towing. The problem is with Blue Ox choosing to use the tow hooks for something other than what they were designed for.

RE: Towed vehicle safety cables vs chains question

If a baseplate came off, it was more than likely a crappy installation, or a home-made baseplate coupled with a crappy installation...JimNo it was a crappy design, and as I recall, I believe it was a Blue OX that came off. It was about 2 years ago, there were 4 vehicles that broke loose, all within a short time period. The problem often run into, is that modern cars often have no frame, because you can build a much stiffer lighter vehicle without one. It also allows from crumple zones. Of course the draw back is that there is no single point that is strong, so you can get tear outs and metal fatigue. In one specific case that I recall, it was a small Ford pickup. The "frame" actually tore out because the load was not spread out over a large enough area. It obviously was a slow tare, as the initial crack had started to rust. The tare kept spreading, till it finally came off.

RE: Towed vehicle safety cables vs chains question

Big huge thing often neglected when talking safety chains is where they attach to. Most base plates have convenient hooks to connect the chains, however what happens when the base plate comes loose. This has happened several times here on RVnet, which resulted in the safety chains not doing anything. The safety chain must be secured separately to the frame, otherwise their redundant function as a safety device is moot. After reading several of these failures, I added new chains that wraps around the frame. When I connect the chains, I connect into the baseplate and the extra chain.

RE: RMP/ZEP The final word :)

BTW:the post intent is not looking for a solution, I now have done the sanding, and it now looks reasonable. It was more just passing on observations on gelcoat.

RE: Thinking of crossing to the dark side

No one did suggest what vintage DP to look at. If you are looking, the minimum I would consider would be a mid 90s Foretravel. You will need a late enough year to get 300 HP+ and a 6 speed.
