RE: Koni FSD's

What problems are you trying to correct? Have you had your alignment check, and what about your springs, or suspension components, sway bars?
Each coach / chassis needs shocks designed specifically for that particular setup. I installed Koni shocks on my Safari and the ride and handling both improved. Neither ride or handling was really bad with old Bilsteins, but was better with the Koni's.
Good luck.

RE: Changing out VHS player

Do you have an access panel at the back of the cabinet where the crt tv set is located? This is normally the case. If so just remove the panel, reach your hand into the space, remove the old cable and attach the new.
If you do not have an access panel. How about enlarging the hole the existing cable goes thru so you can reach thru to the crt tv to remove old cable and attach new?

RE: Exhaust Manifold Repair

If you plan to keep the MH, just install Banks headers and you will solve your problem permanently. Otherwise everything you do is just a bandaid.
You are dealing with two dissimilar metals that have different expansion coefficients. The cast iron manifolds retain heat, and the headers get rid of heat.
Do it right and install headers! Don't take a chance of screwing up your engines heads with drilling and tapping larger bolts.

RE: Hwy 40 through Flagstaff,AZ & Hwy 58 in CA in winter

I-40 thru Flagstaff elevation is approx. 7000 ft and high enough to have snow during and immediately after a storm passes thru. Ice will be present all winter long where there is standing water on roadways. BEWARE of Black Ice in this area.
Tehachapi pass is about 4000 ft elevation and will only see snow during storms. Winter storms are very accurately predicted by the weather service, and typically there will only be two or three storms all winter of significance. You should encounter very limited, if any ice over this pass. I live in this area and weather is typically not a problem for Hwy 58 travel.
Flagstaff is where you will most likely have problems, but Tehachapi should not be a problem if you monitor the weather service forecasts. If a storm is passing thru, just park for a day and wait it out.

RE: Do I need new tires???

We now have six new tires for our Newmar. Thanks to everyone for the information and advice. I already feel better about driving to CA. Again, thanks allot for all the replies and great information.
John
I believe you made a really prudent decision to install new tires on your coach. Aged tires are problmatic, and are prone to blowouts. Blowouts on MH are very serious. Just ask Professional Golfer Ken Green!

RE: Nominate the worst highways for Motorhomes

You are absolutely correct! California's freeways and highways are terrible. They have been neglected ever since Jerry Brown's first governorship. Caltrans now does most of the 'repairs' and they do not have a clue how to design, build or repair ANYTHING!. They are incompentent. Our states freeway design and construction is an exhibit of their incompentence.
All California freeways would qualify.
If I remember correctly, during Edmond G (Pat) Browns' era they started doing "studies instead of doing the work", to determine if and which roads/freeways were needed. It was later published: had they went ahead with construction and repair instead of doing the studies, they would have saved millions and in addition the roads would have been built, instead, all they had paid receipts for the studies. This was written sometime around the 70's, before the environmentalists got so powerful.
During Pat Brown's era they actively built freeways, but it was during Jerry Brown's first tenure when he appointed Adriana Gianturco (sp) Director of Caltran (Div of Highways). They stopped all development of freeways, design and construction. For the next several years, no new freeways. Remember the Century freeway in LA, it sat with right-of-way partially cleared for years before finally being completed years late?
Only after subsequent Govenors and a new attitude at Caltrans did freeway design and construction get back to normal. However, the experienced engineers had either retired or went elsewhere to practice their profession, and thus leaving Caltrans with a group of inexperienced design engineers. They still are light years behind the curve!

RE: LA to Monterey Pennisula/Carmel

I would not even consider Hwy 1, it's too narrow and crooked. I would definitly go Hwy 101. It's a good freeway the entire length and a very plesant drive.
Hwy I-5 is a good freeway, but is rough in many areas. Goes thru undeveloped terrain and farm land. Very few places to stop for food and fuel. Really only one good stop, Harris Ranch.
But I would strongly recommend Hwy 101.

RE: Backward tire valve

HEE HEE Thats great because it works!
All you need to do if you don't like the valve turned inward is to loosen the valve stem and turn it around to face outward. Check for proper inflation and you are done.
If you don't want to rotate the valve, just take it to a tire shop and ask them to do it.

RE: Volunteering and the IRS

You are not in trouble if you get a 1099 MISC, and no deductions are made. ALL you need to do is be SURE and report the 1099 MISC income on your return and all is good!
I have done this for years, and have actually been audited by IRS with no problems.
CarlGeo
1099-MISC's are trouble and make the tax return more complex. It's basically income without deductions for things like Social Security. If you end up with taxable income there may be a penalty for the lack of SSA deductions or withholding.
The `bottom line' is that if you don't get a piece of paper at the end of the year from the Hatchery there is nothing to claim on your tax return.
I'm not a CPA but have done `simple' Income Taxes for AARP for several years.

RE: Koni FSD shocks

Would recommend you consult with a RV specialty shop such as Hendersons, and ask what Koni shock they would use for your chassis. I have a Safari with the Velvetride chassis, and Ralph Andrews of Pioneer Metal Works advised me which model to install. The ride and handling were much improved after installation of the Koni shocks. Very happy with the change.
Get the model number you need and then shop various places on the web for the best price. I paid about $150 for each shock.

RE: RV Depreciation

A significant cost often overlooked when buying or upgrading a motor home is the sales tax on the unit purchased. This is especially true in California or a state that has similar sales tax rules.
In California you always pay sales tax on the FULL purchase price of the purchase. Depending upon the county, that cost can be between 7.25% to 8.25% of the purchase price. Buying a $150,000 coach will cost almost $11,000, minimum just for sales taxes! Add license fees and you are talking about real money.

I have three Fantastic Fans, and have had issues from time to time. Contacted Fantastic Fan service, and they are the BEST!
They will ask you questions to see what your problem is, and then forward parts to repair - all at no cost. My coach is a 97 model year. You cannot go wrong calling them!

RE: Tire Pressure Valve Extenders

Extensions of any type are problematic. The best solution is to use only one piece valve stems on all wheels. Dually Valves are very good solutions, and I recommend them from my many years of use, and not problems of any kind.
CarlGeo
Appreciate the comment. What problems have you experienced with the flexible extenders that caused you to go back to the one piece?
They leaked. Every connection between valve stems and extensions is a potential source for a leak, and the flexible extensions, or solid extensions have more locations for leaks. The one piece valve stem is the best, by far, but it's not cheap!
FalconBrother: Did you need to remove the wheels??? It looked like I could just fish them through the holes.
