RE: No spark genny, now engine?

Thanks Jim,
I have a manual and have unplugged the low oil switch. I didn't change the coil as the readings I got were very close to spec. My mechanic put a new one on and got low to no spark. Now waiting for a magneto replacemant. He checked compression and said it was good so the valves must be fine. Is the only thing left the engine control module?
(btw- I had a hard time for some reason getting on site and had to use a back door. Don't know why. I'll keep the back door open.)

RE: No spark genny, now engine?

Thanks.
Microlite KY-B 4kyfa 26100B
Mechanic thinks its the new distributor that was installed 3 months ago. That might fix the RV but the genny still needs 'fixin'. Fuel is fresh and full.

No spark genny, now engine?

I took my Tioga in the have the Onan microlite fixed as I couldn't get spark. It's been like this for 3 months and when I tested the genny coil it seemed ok. Mechanic said his coil readings were eratic. So I ok'ed a replacement.
Now he says the RV won't start- no spark. I've owned it for 6 years and have never had this issue.
What could he have possibly done that would cause this? He thinks fuse. It turns over fine, just won't start. Ideas?
thanks-

RE: New Boondocking Rules

From the Dept. of Agriculture:
"DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
Forest Service
RIN 0596–AC39
Travel Management Directives; Forest
Service Manual 2350, 7700, and 7710
and Forest Service Handbook 7709.55
AGENCY:
Forest Service, USDA.
ACTION:
Final directives.
The Forest Service expects
responsible officials to apply 36 CFR
212.51(b) and FSM 7715.74 sparingly to
avoid undermining the purposes of the
travel management rule and to promote
consistency in its implementation."
See the words "consistency" and "sparingly"? It seems we have neither. Our local forest, the Stanislaus, says one car length "off" the road. Makes it hard for wood cutting too and currently 90% of our roads are closed to travel with many locked. The directives indicate a 2 year 'public education' period but the rangers leave notes saying there's a $150 minium fine. I'm not a happy camper.

RE: what else should I need to do?

Run the generator monthly and change the transmission fluid and filter annually come to mind. The tranny is kind of messy but you can do it yourself easily.

RE: Which Mobil 1 full synthetic engine oil do you buy?

I read Bob's website a couple of years ago and he put a lot of work into it. Good stuff in general. Didn't he also compare oil filters? and give Fram a not so good rating?

RE: Which Mobil 1 full synthetic engine oil do you buy?

To answer the OP's question: the one that's on sale.
I think we used to switch to synthetics to get higher gas mileage now to just stretch our oil change frequency a bit. I used to put Castrol 20/50 in my Toyota religously at 3000 miles and it had zero problems when I sold it with over 200k. Now almost always a synthetic oil but stretch it to 3500 or (gasp) 4500 miles. If I don't like the current price the Rotella goes in. My vehicles don't leak all have 100k to 225k miles. Personally I like Valvoline synthetic. Probably because Wally sells it cheaper.
Oil related failures are pretty much a thing of the past. I had a client who raced for a living. He would change his filter more than his oil. Convinced me.
The only issues I've ever heard of with synthetic were with shaft driven motorcycles, but that's another forum. ;-)

RE: Engine knock - Ford 460

I just had a new distributor put in my 460 and it quickly overheated enough to pop a hose. It was knocking on a grade at the time. I got the hose back together and bought some octane boost so I could finish my trip. When I got it back to my mechanics we dialed back the timing just enough to make the knock go away. A degree or 2 was all it took. I know it sounds unscientific but it worked.

RE: Engine knock - Ford 460

A '96 has OBD 2 diagnostics. Have yours read or buy a reader and read it yourself.
J&J might be right. I got some bad gas once and it plugged some injectors and it sounded terrible. Still, see what the computer knows. Only take 5 minutes.

RE: Accessing The Fuel Filter - Onan 4000 Generator

I can't tell if there is an access panel from the pics but couldn't you slide the whole thing out and support it on a platform while you remove the filter. Mine has 4 mounting bolts on the underside and it appears as tho there is a lot of slack in the wiring.
good luck

RE: Low oil switch test?

Shoot me. It didn't identify my no spark problem. That was the oil level shut off wire. It even had '12' and 'S2' printed on the wire. I disconnected it but still no spark.
I'm out of cards to play.

RE: Low oil switch test?

You know Clay I know that wire. I had disconnected it to check the connection and had to reach in with a pair of forks to reconnect it (just no room for my hands). I'll have to give it another look. If it has 12 printed on the wire I'll pull it apart for sure.
thanks-

RE: Low oil switch test?

The problem is I only have access to about 6" of wire- 3" on either side of a 15 prong plug. I could cut the wire but that would be a last resort.

Low oil switch test?

Anyone know how to test low oil switch in an Onan Microlite genny?
I've identified the wire (#12 in a 15 wire plug) but I'm hesitant to cut it just to test it. I'm getting no spark and the coil seems to check out. Manual says its NO (normally open). The switch itself is in the oil pan and I'd have to remove the genny to get to it.
thanks

RE: New Onan 4000 Generator Question

Being that new isn't it under warranty? If it is I wouldn't mess with it much. I does sound like it wasn't adjusted properly at the factory tho.

RE: Sparkless Onan 4000

Dusty your method actually makes better sense but my manual actually indicates there is a fuel shut off solenoid, but that's not my problem. Now I've found the oil level switch wiring but I hate to cut the wire and it's connected with a 15 point plug. Anyone know how to disengage one of the wires in a plug like that. I'm assuming that would do it as the oil level switch is normally open. Or could I just check the wire for voltage while in place??

RE: Sparkless Onan 4000

Had a fellow in the campground last year with the same symptom on his generator in a fairly new Class C. Turns out his problem was caused by low fuel level in his Class C. Apparently, there is a low fuel level switch in the gas tank.
That would do it and I suppose it's one more switch I should check out- if I can find it. I do have a full tank tho as I knew I'd be working on it.

RE: Sparkless Onan 4000

Thanks guys.
I tried to take it out yesterday and access is limiting to say the least. I'll check the wiring diagram again to see if I can't find and easier way to the oil switch. The switch itself is in the pan.
Moderator- I didn't want to double post. Can you move this to the tech section? thanks
