RE: Pop Rivet vs Screw..Which is stronger in aluminum?

I use a lot of wellnuts to fasten accessories to aluminum boats. I've never had one pull out or otherwise fail. As a bonus they also form a watertight seal. Here's a link to one supplier showing how they work.

RE: Ever have a near miss?

A couple of years ago on Christmas Eve we were heading home on the highway after visiting relatives. I was slowing down for our turn-off when I hit a patch of black ice and started into a spin. I was trying everything possible to keep from going into the deep ditch on the shoulder and wound up smacking hard into the center concrete divider with the back end of the truck.
When I pulled over off the highway I got out to see how much damage there was. Nothing, nada, not a scratch. It was a hard hit but I couldn't see any damage whatsoever. The next morning I went out to check it again in the daylight and saw where the trailer hitch receiver had hit the concrete and was slightly bent but not a scratch to the bumper or any surrounding panels. I must have hit square onto the hitch which only stuck out about 1/2" behind the bumper.

RE: USB cable adapters

I found them stocked at BestBuy which is about 100 miles from here. They're listed at $14.95 at Walmart in the US., here at BestBuy $34.95. I think I'll wait til my next trip to Seattle and pick them up there.

RE: USB cable adapters

After trying all of the local computer stores and outlets, I went online and found what I want. It's made by Emerge Technologies, part# ETCABLEKIT3.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Emerge-Tech-3-USB-2.0-Universal-Cable-Kit/12575355
The only retail store that I could find that carries them is Walmart, but only in the US not in Canada. I guess that I will have to order it through a mail order store out of the US. It cheap enough that I'll get a few so that I can have one at each computer at home and at work.
Thanks for all of your replies.

USB cable adapters

Between our cameras, GPS, specialized card readers and other electronic toys, we have 5 different USB cable ends. It's a pain to try to keep track of all these cables. We took my camera down to Mexico on holidays but we accidently took the wife's camera's USB cable. I didn't bother packing my card reader for the laptop figuring that I would just download the photos directly via USB. I wound up spending most of a day trying to purchace a cable that would work for my camera.
I've looked in the electronics stores but haven't been able to find a USB cable with a set of adapters that will plug into our various electronics. Does such a thing exist? It would sure make it easier than packing 5 usb cables wherever we go.

RE: computer hacks for GM vehicle question

I have a 2011 GMC Sierra SLE that didn't have the DIC panel. I installed the GM kit so that I could have the full function display. It was a simple install, only took about 5 minutes.
As far as the outside air temp display goes, it's about the only complaint that I have about the truck. It takes an unusually long time for the displayed temp to upgrade to the actual. Our condo has a heated underground parking. When I leave in the morning it takes about 8 to 10 minutes of driving before the diplay shows that it is below freezing outside. I live in an area of black ice and hills so I could really use a temp display that is accurate.

Why I dont drink the onboard water.

The picture is of the inside of a water tank from one of my customer boats. It's 5 years old and has only had treated city water added. They didn't know about periodically sanitizing water tanks.

The pump filter kept plugging up with goo. Fortunately, The tank was not too difficult to get out. It's now full of heavily bleached water and will be power washed and reinstalled.

RE: Is your home haunted?

My dad passed away in the beginning of June and my mother was in a state of shock. My youngest brother went to stay with her for a few weeks to try and help her cope with the loss of her 52 year soul mate.
I had a call from my brother late on June 30th. He was ready to call EMS for mom. She was in a state of panic because she couldn't find dad's Canadian flag that he had proudly displayed every Canada Day (July 1st). They had torn the house apart looking for it but with no success. Poor Mom was so distraught that she couldn't do that one thing to honour Dad. Her doctor came over and gave her a sedative to calm her down and she finally fell asleep in bed.
My brother was awakened very early on Canada Day morning by the sounds of Mom crying Dad's name. He got up and found her on the floor of the living room, tears flowing down her face. Mom had woken early to take one more desperate search for the flag. When she went downstairs she saw something that none of us has ever been able to explain. She pointed at the front door and there leaning against the inside of the locked front door was the flag.

My Brain Cramp

Our last outing for the season ended in a bit of a panic to get home earlier than planned. I took the 5er directly to the storage yard instead of swinging past home to unload.
There's not a lot of manouvering room but I finally got it into it's winter resting spot, all blocked and leveled. The next day I took the hitch out of the truck and put it away and headed up there to unload the trailer and winterize the water system.
And then it dawned on me,,,,,,,I forgot to dump the tanks and they're all full. I know that the indoor storage facility is not going to allow a honey wagon in there so I'll have to pull it out to the sani dump and put it back to bed again.
Feel free to take over kicking my butt. My leg's getting sore from doing it myself.

Pinbox hits the tailgate in "Manouvre" position

I just got a new 2011 GMC 1500 extended cab with the 6'6" box to tow my Centurian 24RKS 5er. I installed the Reese 16K round tube slider hitch with the pin centered over the axle which gives me just enough clearance for tight manouvring in the "Travel" position. The first time I went to slide it back to the "Manouvre" position I just about wiped out the tailgate. (One of the few times I actually listened to the DW yelling at me saved the day.)
On level ground, the tailer sits nice and level and I have 6" clearance to the bed rails but the rear, bottom corner pinbox is 7.5" below the trailer. I unhitched and raised the hitch up to the highest position which gave me just over 1 inch of clearance between the tailgate and the pinbox but now the trailer is sitting nose high when towing.
If I install a shorter extended pinbox, the trailer will hit the cab in any but the gentlest of turns. I dont want to flip the axles and raise the trailer just to overcome this problem. I cant leave the tailgate down while manouvering as it hits the trailer. I was thinking about getting a 5th wheel tailgate and cutting it down a couple of inches. Any other suggestions?

Daytime Running Light Relay Caught Fire

I just finished repairing the damage caused by an overheated daytime running light relay. A friend was traveling in his '04 Monaco Patriot when he smelled smoke. When he opened the electrical bay door there were flames rolling out which he managed to put out with the extinguisher. It would have been a lot worse very quickly if he had waited any longer.
Surprisingly, everything was still working except for the daytime running lights and the controller for the Smartwheel.
Below are pictures of the damage. Another Monaco owner on the Monaco forum said that he had the exact same problem.

2011 Sierra trailer wiring

I just ordered a new 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 for my hunting truck. It has all of the HD cooling options for trailering but it doesn't have the actual HD trailering option which includes the hitch and wiring.
I have the Prodigy controller from my current truck and the fifth wheel hitch that I will install Monday when the new truck arrives. Is there a factory trailer wiring harness already installed in these trucks or do I have to supply my own?
I'm in a bit of a time crunch as I need to have it all up and ready to go by Wednesday of next week. I'm hoping that there is already some wiring that I can utilize to save time.
Thanks in advance.

2001 F350 7.3 160K miles?

I found a 2001 F350 dually 2WD with a 7.3 Powerstroke to use for towing my small 24' 5er. It has had regular services and inspections throuout it's life but it has 160K miles on it. The price is more than reasonable but I'm a little concerned about the mileage.
Is there anything I should look out for as far as common mechanical issues in this vintage diesel?

RE: Front load washer REGRET!!!!

A few years ago my top load washing machine started to leave the clothes stinky and I noticed an oily ring around the top of the basket. Figuring that a seal had gone and oil was leaking into the wash water, I just went out and bought a new top load washer.
Three months later, the same thing started happening with the new washer. I called the repair center who sent out a technition. The first thing he asked was what temperature setting was I using for the wash and rinse cycles. I had always used warm/warm but then the GF piped up and said that she had been using cold/cold for the 6 months that she had been living there. The repairman suggested a couple of hot/hot cycles to clean out the machine, then switch back to warm/warm. Voila! No more stinky clothes.
Fast forward to 2 years ago. We bought a new house and got LG front load washer and dryer. Three months later we had stinky clothes again. I asked her what water temps she was using and she replied that she used whatever the machine said to use. I checked it and the default was cold/cold. We ran a couple of hot/hot cycles to clean it out and have used warm/warm ever since. No more stinky clothes.
