RE: Water Heater boiling over

I read some time back, normally the water heater not suppose to fill completely up with water, a small void at the top of the tank where the relief valve is located & by that the relief cant leak water out. This be true I dont know, but makes since if not water in that area. Our old GBM leaked when on electric & even went as far as installing a new relief valve, a house type & it still leaked. That was before & read about the void being needed inside the tank. I do know from back during my plumbing days, your not suppose to open that relief valve by hand, like if your filling or draining a water heater, because it has an affect on the rubber seal of the valve & will cause it to leak. RE: Front AC unit kills generator when compressor kicks on

If it was the start cap blown, the A/C wouldnt operate, not until you replaced the cap. Now if your messing with the control of the A/C, running it shutting it off & then trying to turn the A/C back on real quick, the compressor has built up pressure & is real hard to get it to come on & will over load the Gen & shut it down. There is such a thing, as the compressor locking up from that high pressure, been many an ac unit replaced because of that, but theres a process you can go through call a HOT START, lot of high amps on start up that will get the compressor going again. Any time your operating an ac unit & shut it off, you have to wait a few minutes before trying to turn the ac back on because of the high coolant pressure in the compressor. Some other things, like the gen may not be getting enough fuel to the carb to handle the load of the ac coming on, fuel filter maybe or crud in the carb from the RV sitting a long spell. Neil

RE: Heater A/C Fan inoperative

On our 99 H/R Vacationer, the fan went out & it was the motor bad. Your fan motor, should be in the same location as ours, in front of the passengers seat under the dash because of it being a chassis item. Could be something as simple as the 12v wire came loose from the motor or the ground wire loose connection. A 12v test light would be a handy item to check & make sure 12v is getting to the motor. On ours, I replaced the motor, got a new one from Advance Auto Part, but me being me, I wanted to know why the old one failed. Pulled the old motor apart & low and behold the ground wire inside the motor, where it had been spot welded to the motor frame had broken loose. I attached the ground wire to one of the screws holds the motor frame together, worked like a top once I did that, so now I got an extra blower motor just in case. On ours, there was no way to get part of my 250 Lb frame, between that passengers seat & dash to get to that blower motor, so had to pull the seat out & was easy as pie after that. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES laying under that area, cause metal shivers dont wash out to easy. Neil

RE: 454 quadrabog?

Those carb secondaries are opening you say, but are the needle jets moving, opening up to provide fuel. Could be real easy, if that RV has been sitting a long time, for the carb to be half stopped up with crud & no fuel being provided to those secondary throttle plates. Ol Qjet carb, has some big plates in the back & if no fuel being provided, man you talk about a bog. It could be something in the exhaust, as already stated, because in those years of your rv, some exhaust pipes were double walled & the inside can come loose & block the pipe & cause a restriction. Let me ask you this, when you were driving it & had the bog, did you notice a lean smell maybe coming from the exhaust. Neil

RE: Car Seat Question

This is a good subject, glad someone brought it up before I did, because I was wondering about it myself. Our daughter now has an 8 week old son, that will be traveling with us to the races. In our H/R, we use the seat behind the passengers seat to belt the car seat in. I'm thinking though like Rick Jay & the others, is there any safe place in a class A. I know the front seats on most class A rvs, only bolt up to the frame work of the coach body & not direct to the chassis like some cars or trucks. In ours, the seat mount bolts just go through the flooring, which is a metal sheeting on top of the body frame work for protection & then 3/4" plywood. I dont know what the law states in NC about this, I will be checking into it to know for sure & if I have to, I'll make or build a secure seat to mount that childs car seat in. Neil

RE: Just installed my new Scan Gauge

think TFT. The tranny temp is a big player in the scheme of things. I do mpg, mph, coolant temp, and tranny temp. It's fun watching the mpg go all over the place. I have seen 3 mpg's going up a big grade in low, to 9999 mpg's coasting back down. It does help to find the sweet spot for the best mpg's if the terrain is consistent. LOOK OUT FOR THAT DOG, :E :E oooops, poor little dog you missed seeing it looking at that gauge :B. Then again, looking at the road steady will put you to sleep & it is not good waking up down in the wood somewhere all crashed up. Neil

RE: intake valves?

That FI 460, just a bit different from the old carbed models, but one thing is still the same, all those blasted vacumm lines that dont last no time & come apart. Be sure 10 miles away from the house man, know how to replace them all & hook them back up right to their proper place, because chances are that intake will need to come off & lord help those brittle hoses. RE: Which Tires ????????????

Oh shucks, tires are simple, just get the highest load rating & ply at the best price you can find reguardless of the name, cause which company in the USA not going to be looking at profits for their company. Do you think a tire company in the USA, paying a worker 20~30 dollars an hour will do a quality job, or will a Jap working for a bowl of rice a day give them their best days work. Probably not from the high pay, because this country ideas has degraded all the good high qualified workers, by putting workers in their place that dont have enough sence to go to the bathroom by themself because of the equal rights people, so why should anyone reguardless of pay amount care. There are some that still care in this world, far & few between, but those that do they will have their OWN business that they can control who works there. Neil

RE: run away country fest!

Just like everything else in this world. They build a 4 lane around the city to bypass & then they put up stop lights & strip malls to make it no different from going threw town. They build a big airport, waaay out in the country & then people build big houses next to it & then complain about the noise. Got the tree huggers, complaining & trying to RUN the world about pollution from lawn mower, chain saws, dirt bikes, cars & trucks AND RVs, but you ever heard of one fussing about NASA sending them rockets up or Air Force One stinking up the air. RE: intake valves?

Since it is the gaskets under the intake leaking, that wont be to hard of a fix, but the replacement parts will be kind of high. Last kit I bought from NAPA was like $60 bucks. That 460, has a big sheet metal pan under the intake, combo intake & valley gaskets, reason the kit cost so much. Would be a good idea to go ahead & replace those valve cover gasket while your in that area & check the rocker arms to make sure none of the exhaust valves have receaded up into the heads. The receading exhaust valve deal, was mostly like on the older carbed 460 engines, but not like it couldnt happen on the FI engine. Biggest problem with the 460 engined RVs, the restricktive exhaust system not letting the high exhaust heat out & the engine running to lean to keep that side of the heads cool. You need to know anything performance wise, about that 460 big block, go to http://www.460ford.com Them boy got the deal on 460 Fords. Neil

RE: It's always something...now it's the generator

Maybe the vents not working on the tank & its pulling a vacumm in the tank & the Onan pump can pull anymore gas. Neil

RE: Shower faucet replacement or repair ?.

Thanks all. Strange, I came on yesterday & couldnt find this post, like it had been deleated or moved so far back I couldnt find it, so no idea any of you had responded. Another thing, yesterday as I was replying on a thread, once finished & tryed to submit, a blank page with a box came up saying they couldnt find the server, Try Again. Funny stuff going on here & has happened several times before yesterday. So, that shower faucet is just like one in the house, maybe it wont be as hard to fix as I was thinking. Thanks, Neil

RE: F53 Flexible Brake Hose Replacement procedure?

Now you know its suppose to rain tomorrow, so dont get out there tonight after that Vodka gets working & fall asleep under the M/H :W Be sad your wife wake up next morning & wonder where you are, then bout that time you walk in all dripping wet. Looking at that pic, man you do have a problem. Just thinking, there would be no way, that clip on the backside would hold that fitting enough to get the rubber hose loose. Can you do a pic of the backside, so we can see what your dealing with. I got a pic in my mind of how our 98 looks, but I think the 97s are different. Neil

Shower faucet replacement or repair ?.

Our shower faucet is leaking at the hot water knob when turned on, running down the shower hose & burning our feet. We have a 99 H/R Vacationer & no idea the brand name of the faucet in it, but it looks just like the replacement models they sell on e bay & in the RV replacement parts catalogs. What I'm wondering, if any of you replaced or repaired your faucet, & if so, how close it is to being made just like a faucet in a house. I've done most all types of house plumbing repairs before, so know how to fix a house faucet, like replacing stems & washers & seats. Thanks, Neil

RE: What Is The Brightest And Longest LED Rope Light?

Hi Mex, This might be what you are looking for? 12 meter reel of leds There are 60 per meter and each one is 4.1 lumens, so the total light would be about 2900 lumens. The entire 12 meters would draw about 5 amps. I seen some of these in action last week under the top cabinets & they were bright. Had a variable remote adjuster to dim or bright & was a kind of blue looking light they put off. What I seen was told was in a 16' roll & with the transformer, remote & all was around $200. Sounds kind of high, but if it does the job I guess its worth it. Lowes, is where they were bought from. Neil

RE: RMP/ZEP The final word :)

That clear gelcoat is damaged & probably only way to bring it back, is sanding & then spraying on another coat of epoxy clear that will etch itself down into that old gelcoat. The RMP or ZEP is just a shine & wont take out the white look from the old damaged gelcoat. After reading, you done the best you could Dave & reads like you did the prep work right for the most part, except that wont work on the old boat gelcoat. There may not be anything, that will bring the colors under the gelcoat back to what they were when new, other than stripping, sanding off that old gelcoat. Neil

RE: F53 Flexible Brake Hose Replacement procedure?

There should be a fitting, on the end of the metal tube that goes threw the frame rail, where you can put a wrench on & then another wrench on the rubber hose to take them apart. Where the rubber hose connects to that metal tube, it can be a bugger bear to take apart & real easy to mess up the hex nut of the fitting using the wrong type wrench. I would say, spray that fitting good with some PB Blaster & let it soak like over night first & then tackle it the next day. Try to be careful as you can with the wrenches, not letting them slip on the hex nuts, cause if you do, you'll be down to a pair of vise grips trying to get it apart & then replacing that metal tube afterwards. You might need another person, to hold the tube & hose to keep from bending them when you put pressure on the wrenches. I've done a few of those hose replacements & the fitting where it goes threw the frame rail is the worst part of the whole change out to get apart. Use some good quality fitting wrenches & it will make the job a bit easier. Neil

RE: '99 Ford F 53 V10 straining up hills

What about after checking the tune up of the engine & fuel filter replacement, adding the 5 Star tune to the computer. We have a 99 V10 & every time it leaves our driveway it weighs at least 25.600 GV loaded trailer & all & I got to say, it aint no race car, but I'm pleased with how it performs on flat ground & hills. I got to say though as well, I drove trucks up & down the east coast for about 20 years, 238 Detroits & 673 F model Macks with recaps slapping me in my back & anything better than that is a pure pleasure. I just had to remind myself, now my neck is hurting, let me go get the ibprofin bottle. Neil

RE: UFO- Stuck on the side of the Road.

You know, sometimes I think the world would be so much better off, if we didnt have computers in our cars/trucks & motorhomes, because they are only going to be trouble some where down the line. So I guess you & the family got to spend some time in the big city of Hickory NC. Neil
