RE: Directv - HD vs non-HD

We have Directv at home and take the box from home with us when we camp. It is not HD and works well. I'm thinking about telling Directv to upgrade my home system to HD ..... will the HD box work with the Winegard dome in the MH ?
OK-- let me rephrase my question. Will I be able to get SD signals to my old 1999 CRT TV's in the MH using a new HD box and my current winegard carry out dish ?
(This will probably be a short term deal as we are shopping for a new coach)
Short term deal- just leave the SD box in the Coach- 5 bux extra a month, probably worth it to not have to Search for the Sat when you use an HD Box.
Get HD Dome in new Coach, then start using the HD Box. :)
I have HD for my main Home TV ("Living Room")
SD Box in the Kids room ( "Kids' Room")
Would use the Kid's Box for camping but they watch DVDs now so I took the Sat dish to my shop and just added another box with Directv
SD Box at work ( "2nd Bedroom") :B

RE: Power Question

I have all most the same question ------The generator i purchased has the 220v outlet along w/two 120 outlets... it also came with a 15 foot 10 gauge cord that splits into four 120v 20 amp outlets w/ground connections... The only reason I would consider using the 220 with the extension would be to move the noisy generator farther away from the camper
Post up the model of the generator- I assume it has the a 4 prong twistlock 120v/240v receptacle since it was supplied with the 10g cord to 4 120v connectors.
Is your TT 30amp or 50amp?

RE: Storing extension cord

Darn near impossible to get the kinks out once you've put them in but a warm sunny day helps:
New Cords also:
Run out the cord and let it sit for a while and then you can work the Kinks out , if they aren't too bad.
Slowly coil up the cord as Dave-Sparky mentioned- NEVER do the warp around the hand and elbow technique- this is what causes the Kinks.
I'm not a fan of the Contractor method because they won't stack- and we work with a lot of extension cords.
mason line on each end to tie them up- velcro works also but again we work with tons of cords and mason line is cheaper.

RE: Thought I had 220 but might be 30A

Enough of everyone giving wiring lessons- this is the bottom line:
Getting it checked- is super duper simple.
And, if it's wrong- getting it fixed is super duper simple too.
BUT...
If you fry your RV....... not simple and not cheap!
Pretty clear call on the Risk : Benefit analysis.
Yo mean like what was suggested in the 1st reply post?????? and about every post after that?

RE: Thought I had 220 but might be 30A

rats - I cant find the schematic someone posted on here within the past few weeks showing how both 50A and 30A pedstal was wired up. Showed the ground connections... Thought sure I had saved that but cant put my hands on it... Was a very neat schematic with notes...
This one?

RE: Thought I had 220 but might be 30A

Thanks - I missed that... Looks like this should be a easy thing then... Just verify the voltages and grounding on the pins... ??? Did he have a 50A or 30A plug
Some one on here a few days ago had an excellant schematic of how to wire up the pedstal for both plugs - I'll have to look for that...
probably a green veggie

RE: Thought I had 220 but might be 30A

If someone went to all that work they must be a RV receptacle around there somewhere... Look around for a RV 30AMP or 50AMP connector on the outside wall near the driveway
He already has the receptacle- although he is calling it a Plug :)
The problemo is that he is not sure if the Receptacle is wired correctly since the Panel has a Double Pole CB labeled "RV"
The good thing is that he didn't just plug in his Trailer and this is a simple fix.

RE: sigma 18-200 mm lenses for Nikon digital

Years ago when I was into photography in a big way (w real film) everything I used was Contax cameras with Carl Zeiss lens for 35mm and I had Mamiya 645 for medium format with their lens. Over the years I did have both Sigma and Tameron lens but found the Zeiss lens so much sharper, but then you also pay for it....
If you still have those Zeiss lenses they are worth money again-
The DSLR guys that shoot Digi Video are using them- changing the mounts to fit Nikon and Canon.
Sharper, of course, but they can Rack Focus much easier with manual lenses.
Old nikkor lenses as well

RE: I joined a cult - the Mac computer owners cult

Quick Tip:
When in The Finder ( click on mac desk top)
Finder should be on the Top left
Finder, File, Edit,View,Go,Window, Help
Click on View, Arrange by and then just select "Name" for now
( you can arrange them how ever you want)
This will then arrange all the Folders neatly on the desk top.

RE: I'm embarrassing my kids.

I like the Iphone-
Built in map directions but Mapquest has a free App- for Audio directions, you can hook it up to your Vehicle stereo if you want which also allows for listening to all of your own Music or selecting a radio station on Pandora.
I hate carrying an SLR so the Camera on the Iphone is nice
Iphone pic- not bad for a close up

It won't match an SLR but I take photos to share with family so they all get e-mailed and hosted on P Bucket anyway.

RE: Generator interlock kit hookup-electricans?

Fair enough.
A shared Neutral only carries the difference between the 2 120v Hot legs in a normal setting because the Hot legs are on each half of the panel.
Example:
Circuit A = 10 amps
Circuit B = 15 amps
Load on shared neutral = 5amps
using the Onan 120v ONLY genset
Circuit A = 10amps
Circuit B= 15amps
LOAD on Shared Neutral = 25amps
NO Circuit protection on Neutrals so there is no way to shut off the overloaded neutral
OK, I'm still not clear of the dangers. As long as I'm only powering my home panel, no one is in the MH, the 10g cord is intact and not in a puddle, what harm is there in having potential in the neutral?
It is not the 10g Power cord it is the 14g or 12g wiring INSIDE the house that the shared Neutral circuit uses since under normal circumstances that neutral wire will only carry the difference in the Hot Leg amps.
Of course if you never ever use those circuits in the house nothing really to worry about and in reality you probably won't BUT it is possible.
The Type of shared circuit is usually in the Kitchen where a Duplex receptacle has the Top and Bottom outlet on each half of the Bus bar's power but share the Neutral.
Turn on the Coffee maker and then the Toaster and that would be one scenario where the neutral would definitely be overloaded.
make sense?

RE: Scab 120V off of home 240V30A for RV 120V/30A

First there is no such thing as a 50 AMP dryer outlet. There is a 40 AMP stove outlet which is the largest standard home outlet.
Most newer homes today are wired with a NEMA 10-50R outlet for the electric range. Yep, the same 10-50R that's used for 50 amp RV service.
14-50 is the Nema designation for the 50amp 120v/240v receptacle that is used for ranges and RV's

RE: Generator interlock kit hookup-electricans?

Bit Bucket, Thanks and I agree with wahat you are saying. I also appreciate the adult attitudes here.
pkunk, As far as the device you are suggesting - I kind of like it. I believe it satisfies the function of a manual transfer switch. That is probably as far as any UL listing goes. They cannot control how it is used.
The grounding discussion has been pretty technical. Personally, if it were my system, I would do it using all three wires and leaving the grounds bonded as they are. Do not just drop the ground. That doesn't solve any of the problem because the return, common, neutral, white wire.... (all technical terms that get used interchangably sometimes, but do have differences), still ends up tied to to frame and skin of the MH, and you have less wires with less margin for error.
But, you need to understand the risk. I consider the grounding/bonding issue to be lower risk then than posibility of shared neutrals. This comes into play specifically because your genny is not 230v. Please, please, please verify there are none in your system. To insure this is not a problem you could just feed one single pole 30a breaker in your panel and only feed one side of the panel. If you needed to, you could move the breakers around to feed everything you want fed. But, understand when moving breakers you could create the same problem within the house wiring if not done correctly.
larry,
because he don't wanna use a Manual Transfer switch and has completely missed the entire point of the possibility of shared Neutrals in the House-
