RE: what about those people who stop fulltiming?

We FT for almost 13 years. Why we stopped --grandchildren. We traveled all of the lower 48 and enjoyed most of it. Just purchased a 2 bedroom house on 5+ acres. Sold Freightliner, now driving a car, the first since 1986. Advantages of not FTing; cheaper, place to leave my tools setup, weekly golf. Disadvantages; I can't really think of anything except missing some friends of the road. In 13 years we have seen almost everything that we were interested in. We can still travel by car and get there in 1/2 the time and about 1/10 the fuel cost. When we started our average cost/night was under $1, when we stopped our average was closer to $21/night.

RE: bought a house

We bought a house 5 weeks ago after full timing for over 13 years. We enjoyed every minute of it. I now have a workshop that doesn't depend on the weather and wife has a quilt room where she doesn't have to put everything away to eat. The Freightliner goes Tuesday, trading for a car. The 40' Teton will sit in the second driveway until it's sold. The house and 5 acres will be cheaper then full timing. Insurance alone dropped almost $2000. Wife always said I never slowed down full timing, maybe I still won't, but now I won't drive 400-500 miles a day or more. The car will get 30+ mpg instead of 9 in the Freightliner. Gas is much cheaper then diesel.
The only regret is that we never made it to Alaska.
Most important we are closer to the granddaughters, 3 months and 3 years.

RE: Distance to dealer ship.

We put ours out to bid. The winning dealer was 2000 miles away and never saw the unit until a year later at a rally. We picked up the unit at the factory, took 3 days for the walk thru any the factory fixed everything. Any warranty work required a year later was done by the factory at the factory. We are FT so traveling wasn't a problem.
We also put our Freightliner out for bid, the winner happened to be local, but major warranty work was done 2200 miles away with no problems.

RE: estes park,colorado springs camping?

2 vastly different areas. NPS in Estes Park doesn't have the amenities that you are looking for. I don't know about the private parks in the area. Estes Park has great hiking and nature trails and is very relaxing. Colorado Springs has quite a few private parks, GOOGLE for info. Colorado Springs area has a lot of things to do for entertainment. Flying-W chuckwagon, Colorado Springs Zoo, Air Force Academy, Royal Gouge Railroad, Royal Gouge, Garden of the Gods, Train to the top of Pike,s Peak and much more.
Either place carry water and hydrate often, the elevation is 6000' + and some people from lower levels sometimes have problems adjusting. Don't go to the top of Pike's Peak the first day you arrive, altitude is 10,000' +.
We work camped in the area for 2 summers.
Make sure dog is not left out if you are not around, there are large cats and bears in the Colorado Springs city area.

RE: Paying to get Work Kamping Info?

All of our jobs were found by just asking if help was needed including NPS. Worked for 2 KOA's 1 OK 1 bad, would not work for them again, usually old, run down and small sites.

RE: Securing Crystal Figurines When Travelling

DW has a mouse & cheese collection anything under 2 oz and under $100 is secured with clear silicone. Anything over that is stored in foam rubber when moving and displayed when we stop. Nothing has broken in 13 years.

RE: Baby it's cold outside and wet inside.

Use the shrink warp plastic window insulation on the inside of the windows. That will keep the window from sweating. It sounds like the windows are not dual insulated. Open all the cabinets and keep clothes away from the walls in the cabinets you need air circulation. Wind chill only effects warm blooded mammals not RV's. We have spent 8 winter with temp's to -26 with no problems, this is the first year we skirted the rig and the difference between the underneath area and the outside temp averaged about 20. Our Teton is set up for -30.
Bleach or a weak copper sulfate solution will kill the mold.

Trading

Today I stopped at a Ford dealer and told him I would like to trade even our Teton and Freightliner for a 2012 Facus and a F250 crew cab. They will send someone out Monday to look. Do you think I have a chance?:h It's been busy moving onto the house.

RE: Tools for the road

We just stopped FT'ing and I carried enough spare parts and tools to almost rebuild the 5er. Carry whatever you are comfortable with. I have patched RV'ers roofs that were damaged, replaced slide seals, done electrical work, re-caulked, etc. Depending on where you are there may not be a local hardware or RV parts store. Other have provide a good list, an addition of a cell phone to call for assistance would also be good. Have fun.

RE: Work Camping Question

We have work camped for 13 years for state, fed and private. The only time a background check was run was for a national park that contained "Camp David". We normally use a passport for ID, if a paid position they need ss number otherwise no.

RE: End of fulltimming

I got the bug early. My parents bought a 1951 36' Spartan trailer and outfitted a 1951 Nash ambassador to tow it. Unfortunately they never did. DW and I wanted to try it from the day we were married in 1966, as soon as I retired in 1999 we hit the road. Only regret we never made it to Alaska something always came up ,couldn't drive to Hawaii. We met a lot of people and saw a lot of things. We thought nothing of driving 500 to 1000 miles to meet up with friends. We will still visit or they can park in our driveway. Our kids are pleased that we are "settled down", and they don't have to worry about the old folks.
The real reason is grandchildren, we waited a long time.
So now we have a house; I have to sell the truck because the state wants me to get a CDL. The local fire department wants me to be a driver for a 15 ton fire truck no CDL required, go figure.

RE: Full Time RV Residency?

Domicile is South Dakota, mail is Escapees in Livingston TX. I don't need a CDL for the truck in SD, no yearly inspections, no income tax, no problem buying black powder for my flint lock, ability to actually talk to my U.S. senators in SD and DC. Our medical ins works anywhere.
The state that we left 13 years ago tried to get me to pay them income tax. The way that I proved that I was domiciled in SD was to get a SD carry permit that is only issued to SD residents. I also made sure that I was counted in the SD census in 2000 and 2010.

RE: Redwood fiver

People next to us have a Redwood. They seem to have a lot of problems, aren't sure what as he works from 6-6 7 days a week. Repair truck has been there 4 times in 3 weeks sometimes for hours. We are in upstate NY (cold & snow), they are from TX. That may have something to do with it. If I see the repair guy I'll ask.

If DW wants things mounted then do it. I used 1 1/4" brass screws for permanent mounting of heavy objects up to about 20 lbs.

RE: What advice can I get using my first Diesel engine?

When we first got ours, CAT said to change oil every 6000 miles because it was considered extreme duty as we weren't driving it 18 hrs/day. After 100,000 miles we switch to every 12,000 - 14,000 miles per CAT. CAT does not recommend synthetic oil. We get an oil analysis at every change, $20 extra. Carry spare filters that are recommended by MB not Walmart or any other brand. My diesel cools down in less the 5 min as do most newer units. Use truck stops or diesel shops if you don't change your own oil. Read and follow the MB manual and don't listen to us.
