RE: NEED HELP!!! ELECTRICAL ISSUE

One thing, the lights are on the 12volt side of things so tripping the breakers on the 110 side won't shut down the 12 volt stuff. There should be separate fuses for the 12 volt side, probably located right below the 110 breakers.
Since RV's don't use the frame for grounding and typicall run both wires to all fixtures grounding might not be the problem. Also if you are used to auto wiring, RV wiring is in reverse, White is ground and black is hot to make it more consistent with the 110 wiring. Maybe you hooked up the stereo backwards?

RE: Tool Box in Bed While towing 5th wheel

Just because the truck is a 3500 series does not make it a super truck, just a very good truck.
Indeed.
I've never weighed my fiver to get an exact pin weight but I think I'm pretty close to the RAWR. If I'm over a little (like 100lbs), I'm not too concerned. My point was that the boxes (and contents) probably don't add more than 150lbs to the back of the truck and they give me a lot of added storage space for my dirty, bulky items.

RE: Tool Box in Bed While towing 5th wheel

I wonder how much weight was added to the rear end of that SRW Dodge with the diamond plate and wooden tool boxes as well as the hitch BEFORE the pin was put in the hitch?
Frank
I don't know about his, but adding a 50 gallon aux tank in front of the hitch and a companion tool box (full of stuff) behind the hitch added about 1000 pounds to my truck.
I haven't weighed it, that's for sure, but the empty box feels about as heavy as the tailgate that it replaces. I use the box to store sewer hoses, my electric cables (probably the heaviest thing is the 50 amp power cord) and a 5lb propane bottle.
In the diamond plate box I keep two lawnchairs, my lynx levelors, an aluminum table and a mat. All this stuff is bulky, more than it is heavy.
Basically, I keep all the "dirty" stuff in these boxes so I can use my basement storage for "clean" things.
Given my fiver weight of approx. 10,500lbs and the fact that the TV is a 3500 I wasn't too concerned about adding the extra weight to the back of the truck.
I had the truck weighed with the hitch and diamond plate box (and its contents) with the tailgate in once (including full fuel tank, me and the dog) and I came in a little over 8000lbs (don't know for sure about the rear axle weight though) which gives me just under 2000lbs cargo capacity. Based on this, I'm haven't thought about weight.

RE: Tool Box in Bed While towing 5th wheel

I couldn't find one that maximized usage of the space and I didn't want to keep my tailgate on, so I ended up building one. I don't have an extended pin box, so this design works well for me. I also have a standard diamond plate tool box betweeen the hitch and the cab.

RE: Survey - problems with slide

No problems with our slide: Sink, Fridge, Stove, 110 outlets, pantry cabinet, overhead cabinets, base cabinets, Microwave and chesterfield (sofa) all built into the slide. No issues in 7 years of service.

RE: Newbie question about diesel fill up

At truck stops, the nozzles at the RV or auto pumps is the normal size.
The nozzles at the pumps for the big trucks (the commercial side) are the large ones.
In your RV, use the RV pumps or the auto pumps and you will have no trouble.
The bigger nozzles fit in my trucks filler but what I've found is that they fill so fast that they cause the fuel to foam too much and I can't get a real fill up.
Be careful not to stick them in too far lest they get stuck, however.

Good thing you got your rig painted first so it will be worthy of that new pad! lol.

RE: Dog in box while towing

in British Columbia, Canada dogs are aloud in the box of a pick up but must be tied so they cannot jump out. They are not aloud to ride in the passenger compartment unless crated. Is this only in BC or across all the provinces? If only BC, it is still a disappointment. BC is beautiful and I'd miss not traveling there again.
I'm in Alberta and have never heard of such a thing. We have an 85lb yellow lab and there is no way her crate would fit in the back seat of the truck. We're planning a trip to BC this September and have no plans to change the way our dog travels with us, which is to have her in the back seat un-constrained. The cat, however, will still be in a crate, cause that thing never stays still and I wouldn't want it wandering around the cab of the truck.
I've never thought that putting a dog in the back of a truck bed was a good idea, and I can't imagine doing it with a fifth wheeel hooked up. I would agree with others that I would rather put the dog in the fiver while travelling then have her in the truck bed (loose or in a crate).

RE: How Many Fan-tastic/Maxxair Fans in 30 Foot 5th Wheel?

We have two in our rig, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. They work great together, one is set to blow out and one set to blow in. This way we can leave the windows closed and still get great airflow. These will be a "must have" item on every RV we buy now.
On edit: we also have the roof covers for both of them so we can leave them on regardless of weather.

RE: Newbies shopping for a 5th wheel and dually

:h Replace the roof? Stored inside and not that old and probably still under warranty - maybe.
X2 - Its only 8 years old, I think the roof should be good for a lot longer than that. However, an inspection of the roof may reveal that there may be some possible resealing of some seams where the sealant has cracked.
I agree with comments about the tires and plan to repack bearings and adjust brakes as well.
A gently (or rarely) used RV from a quality builder is a better buy than getting a new, lower quality one IMHO.

RE: Summer's over just as it gets started

Thanks for your thoughts and comments.
Got back last night after a 1200 mile marathon trip to home and back.
I'm usually a "glass is half full" kind of person and am always looking for ways to make it work. We're gonna see how things go, and we are going to try and salvage our planned 4 week trip through BC in September. It all depends on what kind of therapy she needs (I say camping therapy) to recover.
We live on an acreage, so we will enjoy a little more time at home and I can knock of a few projects on my project list.

Summer's over just as it gets started

Well, it could be worse, but our summer camping season came to an end this week after my better half took a nasty spill and dislocated and broke her ankle in three places.
She was walking the dog in a park by herself when it happened and there were some wonderful people that helped her and called 911 and then waited with the dog for me (they even came and got me since my wife had the truck). We still get misty eyes when ever we think about how nice these people were to help out the way they did.
We're stuck in Regina Sask. for two more weeks so she can have a follow up visit with the orthopedic surgeon to remove the stitches/staples from her surgery and get a plaster cast put on. Then, we'll be able to head home.
Today I'm going to take the fiver home (9 hours of driving one way) and take our dog to our kennel and then do a return trip to Regina on Sunday with our car. I was able to arrange for two days of home care while I'm gone. We have a temporary residence here since there was no way she could get in/out or move around the fiver with her crutches.
Its been an interesting lesson in what like can be like on the road if something bad should happen.

RE: Slideout rails cut into the frame

Seems like the standard way to do it, but I've always wondered as well, how could this not weaken the frame. Yet most frame issues raised in this forum seem to be concerned with the pin box area, not where they cut the holes for the slides.

RE: pro and con's of 5th wheel over class A?

The tow vehicle is a cumbersome get around vehicle, but you have driven it the whole trip and are familiar with it and it already has all your stuff in it.
My truck feels like a sports car after its unhitched from a day of towing the 5er.

RE: pro and con's of 5th wheel over class A?

Last weekend the class A beside us limped into the park with a blown water pump. That was the end of their weekend as it had to get towed back to town to get fixed. With my fiver, we could have stayed in it while the truck got fixed and maybe rented a car if we needed mobility.
