RE: Best campgrounds for popup in Smokies

Asheville SC?? Cherokee SC?? You sure your in the right state? There is a Cherokee county in SC, but it ain't nowhere near the mountains. If however you mean NC. I would suggest Happy holiday in Cherokee NC. It is on the reservation, not far from the village. You should get reservations though. lol....yep, that is what I meant. I can't even think of a good excuse to why I typed SC..:) It's not like I haven't been there before, just not in a popup. :):)

RE: front and roof of pup

It sounds quite fixable, as long as the roof covering itself is not damaged. It sounds like the corner seam was just spread apart as the front fascia was pulled forward by the tenting. It depends on your specific build, but many of the side pieces are backed by plywood inside. I would put it back in place, use a couple of galvanized angle brackets to hold it together on the inside, and address whatever seam sealing needs to be done on the exterior part of the corner. Eternabond may work well for that, depending on the kind and radius of the curvature. And, yes, a picture would be most helpful. Good idea with the brackets.. He said that is what he had planned to do, makes sense, but then, we have never attempted a popup. The roof itself appears to be in good shape for now. Someone braced the roof with 2 x 2's at one time. It has a heavy a/c on top. We're not sure if that is original or not since we have never noticed the ceiling in a Starcraft popup. We know our old Palomino didn't have them. I have never been able to post a picture on this forum, but will try as soon as I can take a picture of the situation.I thought the camper looked pretty good for being left up in last April's tornados!! Pictures might help us and someone else.I'm really looking forward to getting to use it this summer and next fall.

RE: front and roof of pup

Thanks for the encourgement. Hopefully, it won't be too hard or expensive. It can't cost too much for the materials. He already fixed the cables which had just come off due to the man keeping on rolling it down or something. That only took about 2 hours. We're at the age we love stuff that is paid for since he is looking to retire from teaching in 2 weeks! The inside just needed a little cleaning, totally shocking for it to have been at a hunting camp. Course, the guy that owned it was a school principal and self proclaimed clean freak!Lucky for me anyway, since my job is done. :)

front and roof of pup

So..how hard is it to fix the front of a pop up that is pulling away from the roof? I read a post where someone said popup roofs are almost impossible to fix. We just bought a Starcraft that is almost perfect on the inside but the people left it sitting up at a deer camp and the awning must have pulled the front away from the roof a little. My husband has rebuilt a few overhangs of campers and thinks he can rebuild this. We got the camper really cheap and thought it was well worth the try. It looks like we could use eternabond on it, but eventually it will need a new roof. The inside of this pup is really made well and the canvases are in perfect condition.

Best campgrounds for popup in Smokies

Hey.... We are planning a trip to Ashville, SC from Alabama in June up through the Ocoee route.WE'd like to stop along that or the Nanahala (sp) and maybe take in Cherokee, SC as well. Anyone have any favorite campgrounds for a pop up? We're leaving the 35 5th wheel behind to save gas and to be able to stay closer to the steams. I love the fact that maybe we won't have to make reservations....or will we? Thanks, melissa

Gulf State Park, Alabama

I have to say I was disappointed today to find out there is not a discount to rent a site for a month instead of just by the day. We were going to split it with the rest of the family and just leave the 5th wheel down there since fuel is so expensive and just take turns. I guess we will have to go somewhere else.

RE: Grandkids in 55 over resorts

I don't see the point of having a 55 and OVER campground if kids are allowed to visit. People should just stay at a family campground if they know they have little ones that want to visit even for 2 weeks a year! I love kids, but there might be reasons people don't want to be around kids while trying to relax that aren't anyone else's business!

Joe Wheeler is the nicest and safest in that area in our opinion.

RE: leak in 2002 Sierra..

Our dresser is uphill from the window so hopefully that is not it as well Thanks for the suggestion tho! We'll double check around it just to make sure. The shop folks looked at it today and said it was the antenna as far as they could see. It seems that antenna's O rings can be bad and this could be what caused it. We're gonna take the antenna off entirely when we redo the roof, replace the board with one that is higher than the roof and put a new antenna back on one day. Actually, everywhere we camp we use cable or the antenna won't pick up due to the mountains anyway.I'd just as soon use a radio for weather and watch DVD's if we get bored than deal with this again. Anyway, hope this might help someone else's roof that is leaking around the antenna.

RE: leak in 2002 Sierra..

If it's on an outside wall, check to make sure there aren't any missing screws under the rubber decorative piece that covers the rail that runs around the top, and holds the rubber roof. I had one of a previous trailer and found a screw hole with no screw in it. Added a screw and some sealer around it and no more leak. That's a good idea. I noticed there was a place on the outside of the camper where water had run down that didn't look right. The light had to be just right in order to see it. He took it to the shop today to see if they can see what it is.....$$$$$$$$$

leak in 2002 Sierra..

We have a 2002 35 ft Sierra 5th wheel that has a slow leak right above the dresser in the cabinet behind the bathroom. There is no obvious place from the roof that it could be coming from. It is flat where the leak is also so it is not that.. My husband fixed the leak round the antenna so that is not it either.. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried to find construction of these campers on line to see how the framework runs and can't.

RE: TN River rising....

I noticed it was still very low today in the backwaters! I know I read that they were predicting it was gonna rise on the news that day! lol Oh well......it was too nippy for me to be out on the water today anyway.

TN River rising....

We were going to go to Guntersville SP this week and try to enjoy a few days, but I heard after all this rain the TN River is really rising! I hope everyone stays safe!

RE: Checking for rot

Good luck!! We just loaded our 300.00 1967 truck camper on the back of our old truck today which was quite nerve wracking to me. My husband had to rebuild the front end where we missed seeing the "rot" when we looked at it. It was only 101 degrees the day we checked it out and I quess our brains were fried cause we know what to look for!! Maybe yours is in better shape, sounds like it. It's taken awhile to fix since he works full time as well, but it wasn't too hard. It would have cost a fortune to have it done at a shop tho! We're using this truck camper as a "trial" as well just to go fishing in for a night or two at a time to see if we like it..

RE: Truck Camper pulling a boat

Helpful topic! We plan on trying to pull our OLD 24ft. deck boat with an old 83 long wheelbase truck with an OLD 1967 9 ft.truck camper on it to some of the lakes around here to fish as soon as football season is over. I just hope we don't slide down the mountain near Guntersville...

RE: practical 5th wheel size?

See my previous post 09/25/11. I might add that we have come across several campgrounds that stated a limit of around 32ft. So I just told them our 5er was 32 ft instead of 34ft and we fit just fine. I'll have to remember that:D

RE: What DON'T you use??

I seldom use the stove or oven and instead use electric skillets outside or the microwave. I think I would like it better if the stove and oven were electric instead of gas.It would be nice to have that option like the fridge. Don't use the cable too much since where we camp doesn't have it. We enjoyed it while we were at the beach tho. I like having a TV for weather mostly. My husband likes it for football games when we get to go in the fall (which is rarely anymore).

RE: Hurricane Preparedness

After seeing first hand the damage from a huricane that took out our Gulf Coast a few years ago, and then the super tornadoes in Central and Northern Alabama all I can say we have you people in the path in our prayers.

RE: Sewer smell...at wit's end!

For those mentioning solids build-up, our salesman recommended to us to buy a large bag of ice and dump it down the toilet right when leaving on a trip. The ice slushing around while driving helps break up the solids and by the time we arrive at our destination the ice has melted in the tank. Haven't had a chance to try yet but sounds like it might be helpful... thanks for the advice and the tip of what it might have caused this problem while we were on our seasonal site..we have done everything and racked our brains of what else to do!!!!

RE: Forest River quality???

If I was in the market, I'd look at Heartland or Holiday Rambler 5th wheels. We have owned both makes (TT version) without issues. Heartland has several types of 5ers & great customer service. Also has a free forum where you can get loads on info. I heard from a reputable source the Heartland's are having alot of repairs as they have had more use on the road. They are pretty tho. We've had good luck with our 2001 Sierra 5th wheel so far. My daughter lived in it for a few months at school and everything held up very well. It had been lived full time by a farm worker prior to us having it and still looks practically brand new. We figure its a keeper.:)
