RE: 5th wheel tire pressure when in storage

My owners manual says to inflate the tires to max ratings while in storage.

RE: 303 Protectant Part 2

I used it on my end caps and it worked great. It also keeps the decals in good shape.

RE: trans. temp

I often wonder how the transmission fluid can run cooler than the water when the fluid is circulated through the raditor. My water temp is steady at 210. It fluctuates some but when the jet propelled fan come on it cools back down pretty quick. Your radiator temp is not 210, just your engine temp. The radiator temperature is almost always cooler than the engine temp. The radiator/trans water-to-water cooler actually does a pretty good job of displacing trans heat. Thanks for clearing that up for me Boogie. I should have been able to figure that one out given the location of the temp sending unit. Sometimes I can't see the forrest for the trees.

RE: trans. temp

I have an 09 Dually GMC CC and when pulling in the summer I frequently run in the 200-210 range.I have seen it as high as 219 but only briefly. I have talked to the dealer and they would not give me an exact temp but they said those temps wer not a problem. The truck will let you know before you do any damage. Just change your fluids on the recommended mileage. I often wonder how the transmission fluid can run cooler than the water when the fluid is circulated through the raditor. My water temp is steady at 210. It fluctuates some but when the jet propelled fan come on it cools back down pretty quick.

RE: insurance question

I can't imagine why a campground would require insurance that would protect your trailer. They probably want insurance to protect thier property or others (liability) and I am sure the insurance company will provide a liability policy just not a comprehensive policy.

RE: fender skirts question 04 Cougar

I repaired mine with a fiberglass kit I bought at O'Rileys'. Easy enough to do and it should last forever. Put the fiberglass on the inside and you will never know it is there.

RE: axel ratings

I have a HR with a GVW of 14,400. I have 6K axles and when loaded only have 10K on axles. I have never come close to the 14,400 but if I did most of the additional weight would be on the trucks rear axle.

RE: Not torquing lug nuts????

Might I recommend that you purchase a infrared thermometer and check the hubs every couple of fuel stops. Should be able to find a bad bearing before it causes any damage.

RE: hot water heater

Water will spoil just like milk or other liquids if it is left in a closed container(water heater)for an extended period of time. The bacteria builds up and can really create a bad smell.

RE: Water tank clean purificatgion

If you are going to drink out of that tank you need to do more than run city water through it.City water will not kill mold or bacteria that might be growing in the tank

RE: 5th Wheel Tire Selection

Info on ply ratings from tirerack.com; "Tirerack, com ply rating info; Today's load range/ply ratings do not count the actual number of body ply layers found inside the tire, but indicate an equivalent strength based on early bias ply tires. Most radial passenger tires have one or two body plies, and light truck tires, even those with heavy duty ratings (10-, 12- or 14-ply rated), actually have only two or three fabric body plies, or one steel ply." The BFG Commercial LT E tire doesn't have 7 plies nor do any ST radial tire have actual 8 or 10 plies. They have a two ply sidewall and additional belts in the tread. All that info should be stamped in the tires sidewall. Love those that know it all. Ny BFG Commercial TA load range E have the following on the sidewall: Tread 2 plies steel, two polyester, one nylon. Sidewall; 2 polyester. I believe that adds up to seven plies which is the proper way to count plies. Have never seen a tire with 10 plies in the tread or sidewall.

RE: Adjusting the brakes - Technical question?

To me the one that moves a bit before it locks down is the one that is adjusted correctly. The way the electric bakes work require a little movement for the magnets to engage the shoes with the drums. I would think from 10 to 2 would be about right, or at least it is on mine.

RE: Quick Tire Inflation Question

The 80 PSI is for single wheels. I run 60 in my dually with the same trailer weights.

RE: 5th Wheel Tire Selection

Load range "E" is 10 ply not 8ply. I agree, stick with LT's. My BF Goodrich Commercial TA's are load range E and are only 7 plys. I have not seen any 10 ply LT tires in years, not saying they don't exist but in the last six sets of LT tire load range E tires I have purchased, none of them had more than 7 plies. ST tires may still be 10 ply but i would not use ST tires at all.

RE: Battery switch - on or off?

I turn my battery off when it is stored and on shore power. I turn the switch on every few weeks for a couple of days to charge the battery. I also unplug the shore power unless I am working on the rig.

RE: Slider 5th wheel hitch - new to forum

Look for a Pull Rite dealer for the super glide or Discount hitch for Curt hitches. Should be able to find plenty of options in Houston on the Web. The Super Glide by Pull rite is by far my favorite auto slider.

RE: wind deflector

Had one once upon a time and could not tell any difference. I think the only kind that would really help are the type you see on 18 wheelers where the wind is deflected around the entire front of the trailer.

RE: Steel on tires

If you have 6K axles you can get the BF Goodrich Commercial for a lot less than $300 per tire and they are made in the USA. Thats what I have on my 14400 GVR 5er.
