RE: Holiday Rambler quality level?

I disagree that techwriter is a troll. All he is pointing out are facts and RVers should learn from the experiences of others. But I will say that just because a company has made some mistakes does not mean they have to be condemned for ever. If they correct their problems, then everything should be OK. Now I do know that in around 2002 Monaco bought out a lot of companies, like HR, Beaver and Safari. This companies almost brought Monaco to its knees with the problems they had with their coaches and so many recalls were made that they had to build a big repair facility in Wildwood, Florida and they had so many that they would use the old building to get the over flow. It was called Covenant RV shop. I was there on some maintanance issues I had on my coach and I saw several HR that were there and they were changing out the front I beam that was on recall according to the owner, who became close friends with us. If Navistar has corrected all this problems, then we should be glad that there are still companies in the RV industry that do care, and that better quality control inspectors are doing their job. The picture of the Endeavor posted is showing a very nice coach. Few things I don't care about, like the awning, but that is just me. Ray, I would agree with you but, I do believe I've seen him on here blasting Monaco/HR in other threads. Quality has been beat to death on the forum and as always the summation remains: "it's a house on wheels and given the state of roads in the good 'ol USA, unless it's a Prevost, Marathon, or UP scale coach, it's going to get beat to death".

RE: Furnace draining batteries while on shore power

Your charger/converter/inverter could pull some pretty good amps so be careful with the hook up you are describing. Something is funny though if your batteries will charge while running the generator. The only thing that changes in the paths you have described is the power transfer switch that changes when running on shore power vs. the generator. Do your overhead lights work? Do you have a monitor panel that tells you the type of charge your batteries are getting (full, absorb, etc.)? You said you could tell they dropped down over night. Did the furnace continue to run? That blower has to come to speed before the furnace will cut on and the ignition board requires a certain level of voltage before it will ignite the furnace.

RE: Best route

Thank you Old Biscuit. I'll try that route. We'll see how that works out and post the results. Stay on I-40 all the way to Ashville, NC and then hit I-26 right into Charleston, SC. I-40 across Tennessee is a good road.

RE: DP Engine Underpowered

My 40' Dynasty had the 300HP Cummins and it really struggled going up large hills, think Grapevine in California. You will not be happy with a 275HP engine, and don't think of pulling anything bigger than a SmartCar with it...:E:E:E...My current coach is my recommendation...:B:B...Dennis We would probably all love to have 525 hp, but most of us can't afford. Our 330 in our Ambassador passes most going up hill.

RE: Level first....slides out first?

the only problem that extending your rooms while unlevel is potential damage to the seals. it is like sliding a square box out of an unsquare hole. the room wall drags on the seals. and the potential damage depends on how much clearance you have between the side of the room and the wall. i have worked on hwh product since 1973, and as an employee and the only traveling technical service rep for hwh, i have found that it never hurts to level first and then extend your slides. the mfg manuals do some times say otherwise. but if someone can tell me how it hurts to level first, lets hear it. i dont consider myself an expert, but i do know who to consult on questions like this, and i stand by my original post. hwh has made 3 point leveling systems, like the ones on safari's and beavers, but they dont do the job like the 4 point systems. its just a way to cut the price down a little. when you have air suspension, even when unlevel, you are still sitting on air bags controlled by the ride height valves. it will not cause a problem to extend or not extend your rooms, since the frame is not twisted to the point of damaging your seals. the only time you run into problems with really twisted frames is with jacks. and yes, there are units out there with air leveling and jacks, so you can have two sets of instructions. use a little common sense, and if you feel the coach is that much out of level, follow the mfg instruction. or move to another spot. This discussion was running off a cliff or going no where as expected. ;) Now you dare to insert EXPERIENCE, logic and reason into the discussion. How is everyone to respond? :h How can you do this to us? :B:B:B OK I have a side at least I view as humorous. :) I think people should follow manufacturers instructions, or follow practical experience, or go buy a MH with 4 point leveling, and if you can get it get air leveling in addition to the jacks. ;) ROFLMAO

RE: Level first....slides out first?

Good, I'm glad all this is settled.:R Now we can go camping!:p MM. Has Monaco changed their design? Please tell me they are not still selling 3 point leveling systems. I do not think people are going to stop questioning Monaco until they adopt a better design practice like all the other MH manufacturers I am aware of. Dan, I thought you were finished. You continue to repeat your self and making the same statements and asking the same questions. You need to ASK Monaco if they are going to still use the 3 pt. system. How would we know what their intentions are? :h I'm happy with my 3 pt. system and probably would be just as happy with a 4 pt. system. When we ordered our coach, I wanted both leveling systems (airbags and hydraulic) and glad that I did. I use the air leveling most of the time unless we are on a concrete pad. When I store the coach in my storage garage, I like the hydraulics down so that the weight is off the suspension. I'm leaving next week on a 5 day motorhome trip to Las Vegas! Wish me luck! Safe travels, MM. Good luck Mr. Mark.

RE: Level first....slides out first?

Dan & Dancer, don't quote me this HWH stuff. They built the leveling system NOT the coach. I question pretty much everything especially now all the stuff you guys write. I also wrote documentation for GE and ISO documentation for Goodyear tire. Blaze away with your Goodyear attacks. I know from experience that NOT following Monaco's procedures is not a good thing. I also know that HWH has a reason to praise THEIR 4 pt leveling system and say less than good things about a 3 pt. system. You guys have an opinion just like I do. Have a nice day and go level your coach! PS: all that stuff about having one corner to high is BS. Never have I had that problem and I have parked in some pretty unlevel spots.

RE: Level first....slides out first?

Allow me to clarify a few points: Affirmative, I am totally convinced that the HWH 4-point Bi-Axis leveler system is far superior to the 3-point. Affirmative, the 3-point system is less expensive and saves money for the manufacturer. The reason I NEVER owned a 3-point system is because I immediately knew it would NOT be satisfactory for ME. Think some of the "old" folks got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? You don't have you yell at me bud, buy what you want to buy that is why this is AMERICA!

RE: Level first....slides out first?

If the HWH Bi-Axis system did not exist, it would explain the reason that Monaco uses the 3-point system. Otherwise, choosing the 3-point in the first place makes NO sense to me at all. But, now that they've been using it for many years, they are smart to come up with whatever procedure will work best for THEM. To say that there's no torque imparted on the structure while the airbags are inflated is an ignorant statement. Perhaps, they mean that this condition exists whenever the MH is parked on a LEVEL plane. It that's the case, why have levelers in the first place? My HWH Bi-Axis system eliminates the twist forces(torque) that exist whenever I park on UNLEVEL surfaces. And, by going through the leveling procedure(which is dump air and deploy bi-axis levelers) it removes these forces so that you can then extend the slides. This has been explained many times. But, what I see in these forums is that most of the owners of the 3-point systems prefer to talk about THEIR system, and the procedure that's in their manual. There really isn't much reason for them to try and understand that there's a better way. Dancer, I've had both systems and really haven't seen any advantage of one of the other. Not bragging or talking about my system and neither am I defending it. It's what I have and it works. It sure seems like on the forum those with 4 pt systems are quick to put down the 3 pt system and Monaco's use of it. All (& I mean all) mfgs look for a way to cut costs. PS: Maybe Dan the RV guy sells Fleetwoods?

RE: Level first....slides out first?

BTW, I am not recommending Monaco owners not follow Monaco's procedures on the slides or anything else. Current owners are stuck with Monaco's procedures. Were these procedures written by a single technician or a single engineer and did it get a reasonable engineering review? I do not know and I do not know if their is something peculiar in Monaco's design. The slide procedure by every other MH manufacturer does make sense to keep lower stresses on the slides and the rest of us are not stuck. We can buy a MH from any manufacturer we choose. I side with the rest of the industry and will have to keep Monaco off my preferred list until they change their procedure or alter their design of the slides. Dan, why so caustic? The process that Monaco uses has been that way for years. I used the same procedure for our '99 Endeavor, as laid out in the operator's manual. Just because you don't think it's the right way to do things doesn't mean it isn't right for a Monaco coach and it also doesn't mean there is a flaw in Monaco engineering. JMHO

RE: Level first....slides out first?

This discussion has been beat to death on the forum. Some of you sound like my DW! Finally got out the owner's manual and showed her, slides out, dump bags, and then level; air bags, retract jacks, and then bring in the slides when getting ready to depart. Monaco support will definitely give you the info you need. I agree it's been beat to death, but explain to me how you can dump the bags and then level. You have to run the engine to level and the compressors fill the bags as you level. Maybe I'm missing something, but I have tried it and have to dump after I level and I have a Monaco 8 bagger. ;) I don't have to restart the engine to level, just turn the ignition switch to on. I always try to be on shore power to help alleviate the battery drain. 3 pt system; front jack down and then level left to right. We also have an 8 bag system, but do not have air leveling.

RE: Level first....slides out first?

I don't own a Monaco, but friends have one. They extend slides then level - as per manufacturer instruction. I have a Newmar, and they recommend the opposite - level first, then extend slides. please check with Monaco. Exactly. This discussion has been beat to death on the forum. PS: the one time I didn't follow the correct procedure there was a loud crack as the front slide started in (that also helped me rest my case with the DW!) No damage.

RE: Heating Coach in cold weather - Love our Heatpumps!

Hey Bill, your heat pumps are doing great if they work down to that temp. Ours work great down to about 30-32 degrees and then the rear unit freezes up. I don't like to leave it set there until it thaws so have to get up and flip to the furnace mode.

RE: Problems after Norcold recall?

How long since you used it? Could be bad propane in the line. Start a couple of the stove burners and make sure the line is cleared. We had the same problem with the hot water heater last time out. I remember after a winter of setting it used to take up to 5-6 tries to get the burner on the fridge to stay lit.

RE: Diesel Mileage Sinks

It's possible that the stations shifted to winter blend diesel. Mileage will drop appreciably. X2, this about the time of year they start switching.

RE: Propane Smell while driving

Do you have a washer/dryer (or is the coach plumbed for one)? Also, could be the vent valve under one of the sinks. We had one of those fail and every time we traveled with front windows open it pulled the gray tank odor into the coach.

RE: TIRES

Since the OP specifically asked which he should use, Goodyear or Michelins, I will stay with his question and not discuss Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. tires. IMHO, the Goodyears are good tires. Call me lucky, but I've run them on my last 5 coaches and just put 8 new ones on the Exec this year. I have never had a problem with rivering etc. but I maintain my tires and watch my weights. I have not had any experience with Michelins but they are slightly more expensive. If I decided not to run the Goodyears, I would go with Michelins...I am more concerned with my family's safety than I am about saving a few bucks, but that's just me..YMMV...Dennis Where are Michelins made? Mine were made in Spain, but I see Dennis's point. Everybody tries to save a few bucks buying Chinese or Korean and somehow the thought about safety/family goes out the window. Priorities?

Next time you'll know to stop, unhook the car, and drive both across the bridge!............:C That's what I was thinking.
